U.S. May Have to Engage Syria in More Talks

The Bush administration accuses Syria of trying to undermine the government of Lebanon, saying that Syria continues to arm Hezbollah in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution. Syria denies the charges.

The U.N. resolution ended a monthlong war between Israel and Hezbollah militants in Lebanon this summer, but it did not resolve the underlying conflicts.

U.N. diplomats are trying to do that now, working on a prisoner exchange between Israel and Hezbollah and trying to resolve a territorial dispute over Shebaa Farms.

The Hezbollah militant group says it won't disarm as long as Israel occupies that slice of territory. U.S. officials have shown little interest in getting into the nitty-gritty, but experts say the Bush administration will have to start dealing with Syria.
