Since 2002, Jose Padilla has been held as an enemy combatant at a Navy brig in South Carolina. During that time, that American-born terrorism suspect was held in solitary confinement. On the rare times when he was removed from his cell, he was forced to wear noise-cancelling headphones and blacked-out goggles.
Padilla is now being held as a criminal defendant but his lawyers say that, because of his treatment in the brig, he is mentally and physically damaged and cannot help prepare his defense.
