Republican Candidates Square Off in Debate

Ten of the Republicans vying to be the next president of the United States squared off in a televised debate Thursday night. The candidates, including front runners Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney and John McCain, met at the Ronald Regan Library in Simi Valley, California.

NPR's Ina Jaffe, who attended the debate, tells Robert Siegel that much of the debate centered on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Social issues such as abortion also took up a large portion of the discussion.

Seven other candidates also participated in the debate: Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback; former governors Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin, and Jim Gilmore of Virginia; and Reps. Tom Tancredo of Colorado, Duncan Hunter of California and Ron Paul of Texas.
