Iran's missile test comes during the same week that the U.S. made progress on a missile defense system in Europe. One of the system's goals would be to defend against Iran's missiles. NPR Pentagon correspondent Tom Bowman talks to host Steve Inskeep about the missile test.
Meantime, the Pentagon is expected to announce whether the Air Force will take new bids to build refueling tankers.
The multibillion-dollar contract for new tankers has been mired in controversy after Northrop Grumman and its European partner, EADS, won the deal. A government auditor's report last month found major flaws in the procurement process.
