People living in San Diego will be able to drop off old car tires for free Saturday at Mira Mesa High School.

People living in San Diego will be able to drop off old car tires for free Saturday at Mira Mesa High School.

The city’s received a $24 thousand grant from the state to put on the event. City residents can drop off up to 20 car and pick-up tires. Normally it costs $50 to drop off tires at the Miramar Landfill and they must be shredded or cut up so they take up less space. Tires collected at the event will be used as fuel for a cement plant in San Bernardino County. They may also be recycled and used in roadways, playgrounds, and other rubber products. The event is part of a larger state wide effort to keep tires from being improperly discarded in landfills. The tire recycling event will run between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.
