A San Diego non-profit is working to make sure some of the homeless population gets vaccinated against the swine flu.
Bob McElroy, president of the Alpha Project, the organization that runs San Diego’s winter homeless shelter, said his group is working with the county to make sure people who use the shelter this winter can get a swine flu shot.
“If swine flu hits this population it’s going to be catastrophic. A lot of these people, they share meals and water and cigarettes and things like that. So it would be devastating to this population,” he said.
McElroy said the sooner he can get people off the street the safer those people will be. He said he’d like to have the shelter open by Thanksgiving. It’s going to be located at the corner of 15th Street and Island Avenue in downtown’s East Village neighborhood. The shelter is scheduled to stay open until April.
