As they try to deal with local budget problems, cities like San Diego are trying to prevent the state from taking their tax revenues.
On Tuesday, the San Diego City Council will consider giving its support to a statewide ballot measure that would make money designated for local governments off limits to Sacramento. Recently the state has taken local redevelopment funds to help close its own budget gap. San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio says that should be illegal.
“The state of California has a major budget crisis. And instead of fixing it, the state has decided to raid local government monies because they are unwilling to deal with wasteful spending and reigning in wasteful spending in Sacramento,” he says.
DeMaio says San Diego must fix its own finances. But he says that doesn’t negate the fact that Sacramento needs to deal with its spending problem. Voters could see the issue on the November 2010 ballot.
