A new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California finds support is eroding for a special election and for Gov. Jerry Brown’s plan to extend taxes increases.
According to the PPIC poll, 51 percent of likely voters say a special election is a good idea. In January, 66 percent felt that way. Additionally, the poll finds declining support for the governor’s plan to extend car, income and sales tax increases for five years. Today, less than half – 46 percent – of likely voters favor the proposal. That’s down 8 points since January. Mark Baldassare with the PPIC said the discord at the Capitol is taking a toll.
“The more people see reasons for not voting for something or not supporting something, the more people are going to say, you know, I’m going to pass on this particular proposal from the governor and legislature and look for something else,” Baldassare said.
Another thing that’s dropped, according to the PPIC, is Brown’s approval rating. The poll finds it’s down 6 points since early January among likely voters, to 41 percent.
