California has nearly a million more registered voters than this time four years ago, thanks to its growing population. But the state’s registration rate of approximately 77 percent has actually remained steady.

Overall Calif. Voter Registration Rate Steady; GOP at Lowest Ever
The Secretary of State's final registration report before Tuesday's election shows a record 18,245,000 Californians are now registered to vote.

In fact, even with California’s new online voter registration system, the Secretary of State’s office said more people signed up towards the end of the campaign four years ago than this time around.

Despite the total registration gain, the California Republican Party has lost 70,000 voters since the last presidential election. The GOP’s 29 percent rate is now the lowest it’s ever been, according to figures dating back to the year 1924. Democrats have gained 280,000 voters. And the number of Californians who said they have “no party preference” is up by 375,000.
