Peters, DeMaio In Dead Heat In Latest Poll

The two candidates in one of the most hotly contested November congressional races in the nation are virtually tied, according the latest poll released Tuesday by KGTV and U-T San Diego.

When asked who they would vote for, 47 percent of respondents said first-term incumbent Rep. Scott Peters (D-52nd District) and 46 percent were for his Republican challenger, Carl DeMaio.

SurveyUSA polled 559 people on seven questions. The poll had a sampling error of 4.2 percent.

When asked who is most trustworthy, 45 percent said Peters and 43 percent responded DeMaio. Twelve percent were undecided.

DeMaio has slipped five points compared to a KGTV poll taken in June, when he had a seven point lead on Peters.

Meanwhile, 44 percent of respondents said Peters better reflects their views on abortion, compared to 32 percent for DeMaio.

Forty percent of respondents said DeMaio better reflects their views on transportation, compared to 38 percent for Peters.

In the previous poll, DeMaio lead by 17 points among men. Now he leads by only two. He lead by nine points among white voters, now he leads by only two.

DeMaio served on the City Council from 2008 to 2012 and was a front-runner in the 2013 mayoral race but lost to Bob Filner, who later resigned.

Peters, 54, served two four-year terms on the City Council from 2000 to 2008. Upon terming out, he served on the Port of San Diego Board of Commissioners.

The latest poll was conducted by phone.
