The mid year crime statistics for the San Diego region show property crime has taken an unexpected drop.

Dr. Cynthia Burke of the San Diego Association of Governments collects the statistics. She says her findings suggest the poor economy has not affected the long term trend of falling crime rates.

“I know that there’s been speculation regarding how the current economic situation may have affected crime in the region,"she says. "We found that in the first half of 2009, property crime - January through June - taking into account changes in population, was actually down 18 percent”

Auto theft fell most dramatically – 30 percent throughout the region.

Aggravated assaults rose slightly in the first half of the year, but homicides and other violent crime rates fell overall.
