The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has launched a two-step review of all U.S. nuclear power plants in the wake of the nuclear crisis in Japan.
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission voted to set up a task force, made up of senior staff and former NRC experts.
The group will conduct short-term and long-term analyses of lessons learned from Japan.
"Since this tragic earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, senior Southern California Edison (SCE) executives, including the leadership of our San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, have been in daily contact with U.S. regulatory officials already beginning the process of assessing what happened and how it might relate to the safe operations of U.S. plants," said SCE spokesman Gil Alexander.
The nuclear regulatory commission says the short-term review is to be completed within three months.
The longer review should be completed by the end of the year.
The NRC review will address how lessons can be applied from Japan to the reactors at 104 U.S. nuclear power sites and whether policy changes are needed.
