A deputy U.S. marshal shot a suspect who allegedly drove a car directly at him on a Clairemont Mesa roadside this afternoon, authorities reported.
The federal officer and other members of the San Diego Fugitive Task Force pulled over the man on Balboa Avenue, just west of Interstate 805, about 2:40 p.m., according to San Diego police.
A short time later, the deputy marshal opened fire, wounding the driver of the car. The lawman also was injured -- apparently not seriously -- when the vehicle struck him, according to Greg Doss, a spokesman for the federal agency.
The deputy marshal and the suspect were taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Their conditions are unknown at this time.
The suspect, who had a passenger in his car, apparently was the subject of a warrant charging him with weapons violations, Doss said.
The southbound and northbound I-805 offramps to Balboa Avenue were shut down due to the investigation. Balboa Avenue was closed in both directions between Charger Boulevard and Convoy Street.
