Police officers cited 50 motorists for talking on their cellular phones while driving in Chula Vista on Sunday, and another three who were caught texting.
Officers issued those citations, and another 13 for various offenses including speeding and violation of posted signs, during an operation targeting distracted drivers between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., police officials said. One vehicle was impounded because the driver's license was suspended, police said.
More than 70 drivers were stopped during the operation, police officials said.
The patrol was funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, police officials said.
