Caltrans closed eight miles of express lanes along the heavily traveled road to rework some entry points and exits for that stretch of road. The car pool lanes between Ted Williams Parkway and State Route 163 will be shutdown all this week. Caltrans spokesman Hayden Manning says the shutdown put extra cars on the highway's regular lanes.
"The express lanes handle about 20 percent of the freeway traffic. You're adding a significant number of vehicles on the main lanes," said Hayden Manning, a spokesman for Caltrans.
The eight miles of commuter lanes will reopen this coming weekend. However, there is a separate project that'll keep the southern terminus of the lanes, where they join the Interstate 15 and State Route 163, closed through September.
