The Metropolitan Transit System in San Diego announced today it will sell two dozen older trolley cars to the city of Mendoza, Argentina, for $5.1 million.
The sale comes as the local transportation agency prepares to deploy more of the newer low-floor light rail cars on its tracks. Right now, they only run on the Green Line, but will be added to the Blue and Orange lines when a project to renovate stations is completed.
A signing ceremony for the sale is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the MTS.
Mendoza is in a wine-growing area in the foothills of the Andes Mountains of western Argentina, closer to Santiago, Chile, than the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. It is the country's fourth most-populated metropolitan area.
