More than five million uninsured Californians will soon have a variety of plans to choose from through the state's health insurance exchange. The state announced Thursday its plans for compliance with federal health care reform.
Peter Lee is Executive Director of Covered California, the state agency that has been created to manage the insurance exchange. He said 13 insurers will offer plans.
"Different plans will be offered in different parts of the state," Lee explained. "In some areas, like Los Angeles and San Diego, we'll have as many as six different health plans offering choices for consumers. But in every part of the state we'll have at least two or three health plans for consumers to choose from."
Premiums will range from no monthly charge to nearly $700 a month depending upon a subscriber's age, location, the plan selected, and whether they are eligible for a federal subsidy. About 2.5 million Californians will be eligible for some federal assistance.
