  • The next exhibition to take over the new ICA San Diego Central gallery in Balboa Park will feature the immersive multi-media video work of seven artists from around the world, including San Diego-based Pinar Yoldas. Each work studies the relationship of humans to the ocean, ranging from our reverence towards the ocean to our abuse and destruction of it. The exhibition opens with a reception on Friday, Mar. 25 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. RSVP here. RELATED: Two San Diegans Show Work In Venice Architecture Biennale 2021 (KPBS interview with Pinar Yoldas) From ICA San Diego: Surface Tension is an immersive multimedia exhibition that explores our relationship with ocean environments through its consumption, degradation, and beauty. Artists from around the world tell a story of their vision of our oceans through unique video presentations. The title, a reference to a property of water that allows it to resist an external force, reflects the ocean’s ability to act as both a support system for humans as well as a form of powerful opposition. As the largest mass on our planet and the source of life, oceans control the weather and provide food and products for humanity. However, it also acts as a receptacle for the disposal of plastics, oil, and sewage. For millennia, the ocean has been a connective tissue between cultures while also facilitating their destruction through mass colonization. The artists of Surface Tension evaluate these layered dimensions of our historic links with the ocean. Divided into two sections, the exhibition presents six artists who explore both our connection to and resistance to oceans. Artists bring their unique cultural identity to envision the ocean from a global perspective rather than one that functions within a local ecosystem. Together, all of the artists in Surface Tension explore the multi-species experience with ocean ecosystems, adopting historical and present-day tragedies while leading us down a path of contemplation and reevaluation. Where do we go from here? How can we atone for hundreds of years of ocean plundering? This exhibition has no answers – it is you, the viewer, who must make your own decisions on how you will consider your future relationship with the ocean. This exhibition will feature work from Marina Zurkow (B. 1962, US), Charles Atlas (B. 1949, US), Ulu Braun (B. 1976, Germany), Pinar Yoldas (B.1979, Turkey), Caroline Monnet (B. 1985, Canada), Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley (B. 1995, UK). Opening reception: Friday, Mar. 25, 2022 5:30-8:30 p.m. Free / RSVP here Related links: ICA San Diego on Instagram ICA San Diego on Facebook ICA San Diego visiting information
  • After two years of pandemic disruption, the annual Cherry Blossom Festival returns for a full weekend-long event in Balboa Park.
  • Bringing the beauty of classical ballet front and center, San Diego Ballet’s new staging of "Giselle" is a haunting rumination on romantic love and sacrifice. Traditionally, placed in 19th century Europe, artistic director Javier Velasco’s evocative production shifts the locale to the pueblos and ranchos of Spanish Colonial California. The tale of a simple peasant girl who’s love for a nobleman sparks tragedy takes on new life through the lens of San Diego’s early history. As does the poetic second act, featuring the spectral, beautiful Lloronas, the spirits of young women seeking revenge on the men who betrayed them. Date | Saturday, May 21 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m. Location | Balboa Theatre Get tickets here! Tickets starting at $45. For more information, please visit sandiegotheatres.org/event/2022/05/giselle or call the venue at (619) 615-4000.

When JD Spreckels donated the organ to the City of San Diego, it was meant to be not just an entertainment tool, but a tool to feed every human soul with deeper and more delicate emotions to grow our human values.” The Spreckels Organ Society – as the cultural organization – seeks ways to honor Spreckels’ philanthropic gift to the City by building upon its wish to support the uniqueness, value, and importance of the individual human soul, which is highlighted through music as an intimate experience of inner self. The Spreckels Organ Society’s trustees believe in that duty. The Society’s educational program constantly seeks to grow in that mission as well. The Spreckels Organ Pavilion hosts weekly concerts each Sunday at 2 p.m. Beginning last Sunday, and continuing until the crisis in Ukraine ends, each Sunday concert will start with the National Anthem of Ukraine. Prieto Ramirez will also dress in the Ukrainian colors to spread awareness and support for all of those affected. All concerts on the Spreckels Organ are free to the public in accordance with the 1915 Deed of Gift whereby the brothers John and Adolph Spreckels gave the organ and pavilion to the City of San Diego. For more information, visit www.balboaparkconcerts.org. Set in the beautiful backdrop of Balboa Park’s open-air venue, the Spreckels Organ is the largest open air musical instrument in the world, and its performances bring a one-of-a-kind experience for guests. The elevated music venue brings world-class musical artists for San Diegans and visitors to enjoy, for free. For more information about the Spreckels Organ Society, visit www.spreckelsorgan.org.
