Saturdays, April 12, 19, 26, May 3 & 17, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. In this 5-week wheel-throwing course, ceramicist Briena Chavez guides students looking to build a solid foundation in ceramics while progressively developing their skills. This class is perfect for beginners and those who want to refine their techniques through a guided approach. Throughout the course, students will learn fundamental throwing techniques, trimming, altering forms, and glazing, gaining confidence on the wheel while creating functional pottery. Each week introduces a new skill that builds on the previous one. Course Breakdown: Week 1: Throwing cylinders and bowls – mastering form and structure. Week 2: Trimming and attachments – refining shapes, “Why do we trim?” and adding handles (coil method). Week 3: Throwing bud vases and altering forms into garden planters or wall planters. Week 4: Trimming vases using chucks – learning support techniques for delicate forms. Week 5: Break Week Week 6: Glazing fundamentals for brush on – differences in glaze (celadons, mattes, etc.), layering techniques, wax resistant, and firing considerations. Students gain hands-on experience with throwing and understanding of clay behavior from start to finish, as well as confidence in being on the wheel and a deeper knowledge of glaze choices and surface treatments.   • Learn to Warp & Weave! April 5, from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (w/ lunch break) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a sustainably harvested wooden Rigid Heddle Loom and soft natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, instructor Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn: * How a Rigid Heddle Loom works; * How to Plan a Textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.) * How to Warp a Rigid Heddle; * How to Weave; * How to Remove your Woven; * And, How to Finish a freshly Handwoven Textile. All materials to warp & weave a sample included for use. If you’re interested in learning to warp and weave on your own rigid heddle loom, please email in advance. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ OPTION: Students will weave on Ashford looms. Be sure to come prepared with measurements, especially for those going the guitar strap route! By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a beautiful, handmade strap and the confidence to create more macrame masterpieces at home. This workshop includes: 2-inch black leather strap ends (for guitars), heavy-duty clasps for purse/camera straps, various cord colors to choose from, and hands-on instruction. Please arrive 10 minutes early so you can choose your colors in advance of class. No experience necessary. Ages 11+ welcome!
