Writing can sometimes feel like a lonely endeavor, but a good read-and-critique group can help you feel supported and connected to a writing community. Friday Writers I is a read-and-critique group for all levels. This group will offer thoughtful feedback and guidance in your poetry writing endeavors. The class begins with a close read of two to three poems written by contemporary poets, followed by a few minutes of writing from a prompt. Following the free-write, we will read and critique each other's work. The Gelli plate is an incredible tool for making monoprints without a press. We will use it to create unique multilayer prints using slow drying Golden OPEN paints. In this class, you will learn how to apply paint onto a Gelli plate; create masks and stamps; incorporate stencils and foliage; build up multiple layers; and learn to transfer magazine images. The resulting monoprints will then be incorporated into designed compositions on heavy paper. Materials: All materials are provided with the fee paid to the instructor. They include Gelli plate; brayer; Golden OPEN acrylic paints, regular acrylic paints; stencils, stamps, textures, variety of papers are included for use during the class. Working with a life model, students will learn to identify and depict the core “gesture” of any pose. Emphasis is on short poses with the goal of increasing our ability to capture the body in motion. By focusing on the “verb” of the pose, and not the “noun,” we will explore the storytelling potential of the figure. This is an excellent class for those interested in animation and the entertainment arts or for anyone looking to inject more dynamism into their life-drawing practice. Then, a controversial provision in next year’s defense budget will strip coverage for gender-affirming care for military family members under the age of 18. Plus, Sweetwater Union High School District moves forward with new cuts to the schedule at Chula Vista High. Students, parents and teachers are worried those changes will hurt the school’s arts program.
