About Kaylee Daugherty Kaylee Daugherty is an up-and-coming singer in the San Diego jazz scene. With roots in gospel and R&B, her musical interpretations come with soul and passion. She is humbled to play with some of the best musicians around and to have played at a great variety of venues in Southern California, ranging from the lively wineries of Temecula, the intimate coffeeshops of Oak Glen, to the upscale restaurants of Laguna Beach. With a repertoire of upwards 300 songs in English, Spanish, Portuguese and French, and in the styles of swing, blues, bossa nova, boleros and funk, Kaylee has a song for everyone. Whether in a duo, trio, or with the energy of a quartet+, Kaylee can elevate the experience of any space. Kaylee’s favorite part of performing is bringing joy to her audiences through the universal language of music. Her music makes kids dance and gives older folk a sigh of nostalgia. About Amanda Portela Amanda started her musical career in San Francisco, she frequented many an open mic and one in particular at the 16th and Mission Bart Station. It was there that she was inspired to begin her path as a singer songwriter. A few years later Amanda found herself at Mesa College studying jazz and singing for the Mesa Big Band then later on joining a Congolese band in 2010 called Bateke Beat. Amanda’s musical endeavors lead her to performing at various clubs and festivals in San Diego. Portela, used her new found passion for singing Jazz and started a popular “Jazz Jam” at a Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest. Shortly thereafter, Amanda joined the Indie rock band by the name of Viva Apollo. Viva Apollo was notorious within the local San Diego music circuit, performing in all kinds of venues including a late night local cable access show, Tonight in San Diego. UC San Diego Music is honored to welcome composer and jazz legend HENRY THREADGILL to campus: Tuesday, February 6 at 8 p.m. at the Conrad Prebys Music Center, Experimental Theater. A guest of fellow Pulitzer Prize winner, Distinguished Professor of Music Anthony Davis, Mr. Threadgill is a composer, saxophonist, and flautist. He was awarded the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his album: "In for a Penny, In for a Pound." Mr. Threadgill will coach and perform with UC San Diego Music graduate students, to perform excerpts from his album: "Dirt...And More Dirt." About Cobby Brzeski Cobby Brzeski is a multi-genre, multi-instrumental musical artist and songwriter originally from Naples, Florida, and is now based in San Diego, CA. Cobby’s firm grasp of harmony, playful melody writing, and charming voice has created new fresh new environment for jazz to shine once again. While mainly focused on Jazz in the Swing Idiom, Cobby’s is equally versed in a wide variety of musical genres ranging from Indie-Acoustic, R&B, Pop, etc.. Described as a vintage girl in a modern world, Cobby’s music possesses a natural gift for sensitive, relatable storytelling and is a blend of influences from Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Helen Forrest, The Andrew Sisters and others, twisted with modern influences like Jason Mraz, Cyrille Aimee, and Post Modern Jukebox. Hurricane Beryl weakened slightly to a category 3 early Monday, the National Hurricane Center said. On Sunday, Beryl was the first-ever Atlantic hurricane to reach a Category 4 level in June.

About Paul Combs | Paul Combs holds a B.Mus. in composition from the Philadelphia Musical Academy and a M.M. in performance at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. His eclectic career has included performing, composing for theater, film radio and television, and producing and announcing at radio stations in Philadelphia and Boston. From 1986 to 1999 he worked full-time in music education. As a music education activist he was a founding member and two-term Chair of the Society for General Music in Massachusetts (SGMM), and later sat on the Board of the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE). “Paul plays heavenly alto.” Valerie Ridenour – Key West, The Newspaper Most recently Mr. Combs taught wind instruments privately and was on the faculty of the Lowell Jazz Day Camp. He also directed the Jazz Ensemble of the Chelmsford Community Band. About Giselle Anguizola For over twenty years, G has been an unmissable voice in the swing dance community as a successful: performer, instructor, competitor, event organizer, social dancer, judge, DJ, and singer/band leader. One of the top proponents of syncopated footwork, personal style, improvisation and communication - she will breathe rhythmic life into any dance, class, or stage appearance. She is founder of Girl Jam (2005), an organization honoring women in swing music and dance. G sings and dances in swing bands as a form of expressive love and entertainment. She has devoted herself to combining tap/swing with singing as part of her performance. Giselle Anguizola is a dancer, singer, event organizer, yogi, healer, sociologist, patron of the healing arts, science, and cosmic magic. She is interested in understanding how the environment affects society and how as human beings we can learn to live in harmony with nature. Giselle “G” is multi-faceted, she is a seeker of knowledge and an active teacher for those interested in learning. She received her B.A. in Social Ecology in 2004, studied pre-med, became a yoga instructor, has worked extensively in social justice education, is an advocate for women’s rights, is passionate about astrology, is currently studying to be a natural health coach, and has loved swing music since she was a teenager. G loves bringing equality and self value to others and she is available for panel discussions, lectures, and coaching. Her current projects include teaching dance and yoga online, and performing with the New Orleans Swinging Gypsies. Justin & Melonie Grinnell make their debut at Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 138th Session of Dim Sum & Jazz. Seating begins at 6 p.m. and the music from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations! About Melonie Grinnell | Melonie Grinnell is an active as an educator and performer. She began studying piano at an early age and has since been recognized for her skills as a pianist, and her abilities as a vocalist, music educator, and musical director. Melonie received her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with jazz emphasis from the University of Miami and a Masters of Music performance degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. Additionally, she is on the faculty for the Francis Parker/KSDS 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop where she teaches jazz piano and co-directs middle school to high school student ensembles. She is also active as an adjudicator for instrumental jazz festivals including the Coronado/COSA Jazz Festival and the KSDS Jazz 88/CMEA festival. About Justin Grinnell | Justin Grinnell is a San Diego-based freelance jazz bassist and music educator. More importantly, he is a husband to pianist/educator Melonie Grinnell and father to their two sons. In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest. Justin received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Jazz Performance from San Diego State University while studying with bassists Gunnar Biggs and Bert Turetzky. Justin also achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status for a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Besides studying privately with Los Angeles' first-call jazz bassist, Darek Oles, Justin's enrollment at USC gave him the opportunity to study with internationally-recognized jazz artists Peter Erskine, Russ Ferrante, Bob Mintzer, and Alan Pasqua.
