Explore mindfulness-based writing using fun prompts to collectively inspire and deepen your intuitive expression. Participants in this one-session creative writing workshop will be inspired by a series of short, in-class prompts with a poem and pictures. The aim is to boost creativity and deepen each participant’s intuitive expression through contemplative practices. We will start this workshop with a brief mindfulness settling-in exercise—and a poem to accompany the session’s theme. And after each writing prompt, participants will be encouraged to discuss their work in small groups. This intuitive creation process is highly motivating; it enhances self-awareness and the flow of ideas and connection with others. As a creative writing teacher and published author since 2007, and a trained mindfulness teacher since 2017, I enjoy fostering unique and brave spaces for participants to gather from all backgrounds and walks of life. This course is designed for every type of writer: novelists, poets, screenwriters, playwrights, journalists, essayists, etc., with all levels of experience: from novice writers to seasoned authors. Knowing how to establish mood is essential to good writing. Hook readers early through the expression of believable feelings and a well-established mood. The best tools to create mood and atmosphere are simple literary elements. We will explore them in this three-hour workshop and write from prompts to try them out and build new stories. Please be advised that it is best to register at least a week before the start of a class to help our instructors prepare and ensure that it does not get canceled or rescheduled. In this film, Taylor Lane, an impassioned surfer, creates a functional surfboard with 10,000 littered cigarette butts collected from California beaches. “The Cigarette Surfboard” takes Lane around the world to learn from professional surfers who are working to protect and restore the health of the oceans through science, education, art, business, and political activism. Inspired by this global cast of characters, Lane returns home to California and uses the board to generate uproar on the environmental, human health, and economic impacts of cigarette butts. This immersive documentary gives viewers an up-close experience of the ocean through surfers' eyes to amplify a message of urgency and possibility regarding the well-being of our oceans. A moderated Q&A with Lane and filmmaker Ben Judkins will follow the screening. Doors will open at 5 p.m. for the Ciggy Board exhibit and refreshments. Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Thursdays, October 2, 9, 16, 23 & November 6, from 6-8:30 p.m., with last class 6-9 p.m. In this 5-week wheel-throwing course, Ceramicist Briena Chavez guides students looking to build a solid foundation in ceramics while progressively developing their skills. This class is perfect for beginners and those who want to refine their techniques through a guided approach. Throughout the course, students will learn fundamental throwing techniques, trimming, altering forms, and glazing, gaining confidence on the wheel while creating functional pottery. Each week introduces a new skill that builds on the previous one, ensuring steady growth and mastery of key pottery concepts. Bonita is located in a rural unincorporated part of San Diego County nestled in the Sweetwater River Valley. Find out about the rustic character of the valley through artifacts and history objects in the museum. Nearly 1,000 acres of the valley are permanently preserved as open space, including much of the riverbed. Several stables operate in the valley and horses are not an uncommon site on the miles of trails that crisscross the valley.
