On Sunday afternoon, May 21, PHES Gallery will open its newest exhibition, “Story Quilts” in Carlsbad, CA. "Story Quilts" features the work of eleven local textile and fiber artists; Sandra Lauterbach, Nancy Lemke, Viviana Lombrozo, Nelda McComb, Dan Olfe, Marty Ornish, Karen Rips, Tara Ritacco, Dinah Sargeant, Deborah Weir, and Susan Willen. Calling all Poets! A poetry writing competition will be held at PHES Gallery in conjunction with “Story Quilts.” Please join us for a creative dive into ekphrastic poetry - poetry written in response to art. The public will have the opportunity to write a poem (or poems) in response to the show at the Gallery. Submissions will be accepted through June 11. Each entry must include the quilt number, your name, and the title of your poem. Poems will be performed in the Gallery courtyard on June 25 at 5 p.m., followed by a poet's reception. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 poems. Throw your partner over your shoulders and race through the custom course with the Partner Carrying Race. Prove which team is the strongest with a suspenseful game of Tug-O-War! Skate Rising is hosting free learn-to-skate lessons on Saturday May 13 from 9-11 a.m. at Encinitas Community Park. Founded in 2016, the program offers service opportunities and free skate instruction for girls ages 4-18 every second Saturday of the month. The youth program invites participants to bring soap, shampoo, toothpaste or other personal care products to donate to the Community Resource Center’s domestic violence services. Professional instruction will be offered by local pro and Olympic skaters and free rental gear will be available for all. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes from Arbor Skateboards, Hydro Flask and Etnies. Those who are interested can register for free here.
