The first annual Walk for the Fallen is set to take place, Saturday, Nov. 6 just past Sycuan Casino to benefit the Veterans Association of North County (VANC), a non-profit actively supporting military personnel and families after service. San Diegans can walk or run a 5K or 10K trail course, with all proceeds benefiting local veterans. Walk for the Fallen aims to honor American veterans while raising awareness about the struggles often faced after serving, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicide. These walks strive to celebrate the collective service of our military’s men and women – and create a sense of community and support around them. Runners will take off on a memorial trail run down Sloan Canyon Road, one of the most beautiful and maintained roads in San Diego County. The 5K will begin at 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30am intervals, with the 10K starting at 7:30am. Participants should arrive 30 minutes before scheduled race time. Runners, strollers, joggers, and walkers also have the option to start when they want. Water stations and American Indian music will be spaced on the course for participants to enjoy. “This is one of the most beautiful trail runs that I’ve seen,” said Steve Lebherz, event organizer. “There’s gorgeous Oak trees, creek beds with running water (with rain) and rolling hills. Very picturesque!” To make a special weekend out of it, hotel discount packages are available ranging from $59-$69 per night, plus spa packages available. Parking is at the Sycuan Casino Resort, located at 5469 Casino Way in El Cajon (92019). The trail run will take place on the Sycuan Reservation behind the resort.
