Tuesdays, 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. January 7–February 11 (6 weeks, 18 total hours of instruction) AAC Art Studio (Includes model) This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents. The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch will open its gates to springtime enthusiasts beginning Saturday, March 1, 2025 for friends and families to wander amongst the colorful fifty-five acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus: a flower renowned for its large, double-petaled blooms that sit atop tall, straight stems. For the 2025 season, The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch is thrilled to welcome its very first traveling exhibit and will serve as the colorful backdrop for artist Alex Heveri’s, “Glass in Flight” which features over three dozen glass and steel sculptures of sparkling butterflies, dragonflies, bamboo, bees and insects that compliment the gardens and fields. The dazzling attraction stretches eight to ten weeks each year, from early March through early May, with a full slate of activities including live music performances, workshops and wellness classes. “This is going to be the most colorful season at The Flower Fields to date,” says Fred Clarke, General Manager of The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch. “We can’t wait to see the faces of our guests as they take in the sight of Alex Heveri’s life-like, giant sculptures set against the natural beauty of The Flower Fields.” “Glass in Flight” features giant insects handcrafted from glittering Dalle de Verre glass, set into bright, powder-coated steel frames that will be scattered around The Flower Fields like giant jewels, complimenting the 55 acres of ranunculus and colorful gardens. Heveri employs the use of light and color in her work and fittingly draws inspiration from nature, in particular, the fluid and ethereal movement of butterflies, fireflies and beetles in flight. “The kaleidoscope of color that the Flower Fields bring each year is a stunning contrast for the individual sculptures that make up my ‘Glass in Flight’ exhibit,” says Artist, Alex Heveri. “I’m thrilled to bring my largest exhibit to date to Carlsbad, with over 38 sculptures sprinkled throughout the fields.” In addition, the 2025 Activity Calendar is blooming with activities and programming that have become a tradition for returning guests to enjoy year after year. The outdoor music series is set to feature performances by Gainesville The Band, Mariachi Serenata, The Free Collective Band, Bill Magee, Bayou Brothers, Cool Rush and Michele Lundeen. The Flower Fields’ wellbeing offerings are expanding with the addition of Golden Hour Pilates and Family Yoga in addition to the return of Sunset Meditation and Sound Healing and Flower Flow Yoga classes. Sunset Wine Tasting, Flower Crown Workshops and Tea in the Garden will return across multiple dates. The American Flag of Flowers, Tractor Wagon Rides, Artist Gardens, Sweet Pea Maze, Santa’s Playground and Carlsbad Mining Company will deliver on the nostalgic experiences The Flower Fields is renowned for delivering for over sixty years. Emphasis is on short poses with the goal of increasing our ability to capture the body in motion. By focusing on the “verb” of the pose, and not the “noun,” we will explore the storytelling potential of the figure. This is an excellent class for those interested in animation and the entertainment arts or for anyone looking to inject more dynamism into their life-drawing practice. Saturday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. January 25 (1 Day, 5 total hours of instruction) On Location at La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Studio The School of the Arts welcomes LA-based artist Tomory Dodge leading a one-day plein air workshop. Tomory and the class will begin the day at the La Jolla Studio and then walk down to the Cove to paint. (If accessibility is an issue, students are welcome to drive down to the Cove). Tomory will focus on exploring tension within a painting—by pushing the boundaries between representation and abstraction—as well as three-dimensional (3D) space and the physicality of the materials used to paint. Materials: Portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, sizes 2, 4, and 6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail, sizes 2–4.
