A Weaving Workshop with Rebecca Smith Join us as creative weaving artist Rebecca Smith leads a two-day workshop in the technique of inlay, a process for weaving pictorial and geometric designs on a loom. In this workshop, participants will weave designs simultaneously with the sheer, transparent background or ground cloth. When the finished piece is hung, light travels through the background cloth to frame the design, which remains opaque. Students can bring their own designs and yarn or use the materials Rebecca provides. If students need a loom, they can rent an Ashford table loom from San Diego Creative Weavers Guild which measures 30″ deep and 24″ wide. Students must be a member of the Guild to be able to rent the looms. Guild membership is $35 per year. The workshop is intended for weavers who are familiar with the workings of a 4-harness loom or rigid heddle loom. Students should arrive with a warped loom; instructions for warping the loom will be sent in advance. Students will need to purchase 16/1 linen yarn warping their looms (cost is $20 per ¼ pound cone; sources will be provided). The instructor will provide specifications for materials needed and will send warping requirements to students prior to the workshop. The instructor will provide a selection of yarns to supplement what the students bring and will provide designs for the students to follow as they weave. For designers, creatives, and the general public interested in natural color in textiles and its possible modifications. Learn from the experts! This class is led by Mildred and Sama Barrios, who run a Mexico-based natural color studio called SUULA. In this hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to the fundamentals of modifying natural color. In the realm of natural dyeing, modifiers involve the partial or total application of substances such as vinegar, iron oxide, and baking soda, among others, to fabric dyed with natural dyes. This process alters the tone of the dye, allowing for a wider variety of colors or the creation of patterns and designs on the fabric. Some dyes react more strongly than others to these modifiers. Join Catalyst of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Art Pharmacy, and San Ysidro Health for a live panel discussion on the power of social prescribing in adolescent mental health care. This in-person event will explore how non-clinical interventions — like arts engagement and community connection — can improve health outcomes, reduce loneliness, and reshape how we approach care for young people. This partnership was born out of the Arts & Intersections Collaborative, a Catalyst-led initiative designed to explore how the arts can intersect with other sectors—like health, education, and workforce development—to address complex social challenges. The collaboration helped lay the groundwork for bringing this initiative to San Diego, with a specific focus on supporting youth mental health. The result is a first-of-its-kind pilot in San Diego, introducing arts-based social prescribing as a new model for improving adolescent mental health in the region. Attendees will hear directly from the leaders of this groundbreaking initiative and learn how cross-sector partnerships are fueling a movement to advance whole-person health in San Diego and beyond. The event will include a panel discussion and Q&A featuring Chris Appleton, CEO of Art Pharmacy, Matt D’Arrigo of the Clare Rose Foundation, and Dr. Priti Ojha of San Ysidro Health Center to discuss the impact of social prescribing and the new partnership within San Ysidro Health. Be a part of this important conversation to help shape a more connective, creative, and community centered approach to help in our region. Nearly 400 of the top junior tennis players in the country, aged 16 and 18 and under, will compete for the title of National Champion. In addition, wild cards for direct entry into the US Open will be awarded to the tournament’s top finishers. The Girls’ 16s event will begin on Saturday, August 2 and conclude with the singles and doubles finals on Saturday, August 9. The Girls’ 18s tournament will get underway on Sunday, August 3 and conclude with the singles and doubles championships on Sunday, August 10. Both divisions will feature 192-player singles draws and 96-team doubles draws. The Opening Ceremony for the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s and 18s National Championships will take place at the Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday, August 2 at 4:30 p.m. (PDT). Admission is free each day of the tournament and there is no charge for parking at Barnes Tennis Center. Once upon a time, there was a little ogre named Shrek….” Now, you can see his journey unfold in the stage production of "Shrek the Musical." Carlsbad Community Theatre (CCT) is making the Broadway award-winning musical as the first show of their season. Shrek and his friends will call San Diego their new home – or swamp in the case of Shrek – July 25 - 27! Yes, your favorite ogre is back in the hilarious stage spectacle based on the DreamWorks Oscar®-winning, smash hit, animated film. It is a new kind of love emphasizing the importance of loving ourselves and one another. And thus begins the tale of an unlikely hero who finds himself on a life-changing journey alongside a wisecracking Donkey and a feisty princess who resists her rescue. Making the Magic: The show brings three amazing talents together to this incredible production. "Shrek" is directed by Mark Scott, who is noted to have directed over 100 productions and came out of retirement to lead the "Shrek the Musical" team. A beloved drama professor at Rancho Buena Vista High School for over 30 years, Scott is celebrated for the quality of his productions and his lasting impact on thousands of students. His work has earned top honors from state and regional theatre organizations and was inducted into the California Educational Theatre Hall of Fame. Another notable head of the "Shrek" creative team is choreographer Dewey Decking, a highly sought-after talent in San Diego and beyond. He grew up performing in regional theatres across San Diego County, including Moonlight Amphitheatre and Carlsbad Community Theatre. Dewey trained at Dance Arts and later majored in Musical Theatre with a minor in Dance at the Boston Conservatory. One interesting note – Dewey’s grandfather was Carlsbad’s first mayor and namesake of the local airport. The music director for "Shrek" is the notable Lyndon Pugeda, recently honored for his work at La Jolla Playhouse on The Ballad of Johnny and Juliet. Widely respected across Southern California, his credits include The Old Globe, Moonlight Stage Productions, and Riverside City College. Pugeda has earned multiple honors, including a Craig Noel Award nomination and three National Youth Arts Awards. The main stars in the Carlsbad Community Theatre’s "Shrek" production include Shrek (Greg Bailey – from Temecula), Fiona (Kaylen Lash – from Carlsbad), Donkey (TJ Rodriguez – from Carlsbad) and Lord Farquaad (Brian Imoto – from El Cajon). There are 60 talented performers who make up the illustrious cast and hail from all parts of San Diego County as well as Temecula/Riverside County. They are comprised of adult and children/youth performers making up all your beloved characters as well as the fun Fairytale Creatures who you love from the DreamWorks Animation smash hit movie.
