Learn to Weave! Sunday, September 28, from 2-6 p.m. Join us for an afternoon of fiber friendship and camaraderie. Weaving is an ancient craft; it shelters and clothes as well as adorns our spaces, adding texture, color, design and inspiration to our lives. And it is the actual process of weaving, along with selecting fibers, natural objects; guiding weft through the vertical foundation of warp strings; creating pattern/texture as the process unfolds…these steps continue to connect us with the past, and more importantly, with ourselves. Join in this weaving workshop as we weave intuitively and work together in a space of creativity and openness. Instructor Jeanine Ertl will provide guidance in a variety of weaving techniques and will surround you with warped looms to work on, tools to learn with, natural fibers, and foraged and gathered natural objects to incorporate into your weavings. Feel free to bring your own items to weave into your piece, especially if there are any fibers/yarns, stones/crystals, shells, leaves/grasses, etc. that you’d like to experiment with. Each weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind woven textile. We’ll have rods on hand for those who would like to adapt their pieces into wall hangings. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! A portion of the proceeds from this collection will be dedicated to acquiring the technology necessary for this innovative initiative. The inaugural holopod will be installed at the Chema Vision Children's Center in Kibera, Kenya. The collection features striking punk glam screenprinted paintings that vividly portray the faces of Indigenous leaders, each piece a powerful homage to the guardians of our natural world. These artworks evoke the spirit and resilience of the natural protectors, capturing their strength and wisdom. The punk glam aesthetic infuses a contemporary edge, blending rebellious energy with reverence for tradition, creating a visually arresting narrative that honors the vital role these leaders play in safeguarding our environment. Each painting serves as a celebration of cultural heritage and environmental stewardship, inviting viewers to reflect on the deep connections between identity, nature, and activism. The collection will be on display and available for public purchase on Friday, September 12, and Saturday, September 13. Join a community of like-minded volunteers working to restore the San Diego River Estuary- a highly sensitive habitat that is home to several endangered species. By removing invasive plants, you’ll directly support the return of native pollinators and wildlife, prevent erosion, improve water quality, and protect endangered species, like the California Least Tern. Together, we will create a healthier, more accessible natural space for the entire community to enjoy. This is a huge effort and a great opportunity for those looking to try out field work, connect with fellow nature lovers, make a meaningful difference for a critical and fragile ecosystem, and explore the beautiful estuary habitat! We’d love to see you there! What to Expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals that require hand pulling, so be prepared to get dirty. All necessary tools will be provided, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred. Who Would Be Perfect for the Team: We welcome individuals from all walks of life! Retired folks can use their time and experience to contribute to the environment, while students seeking hands-on experience in habitat restoration can gain valuable knowledge and skills. Families are also encouraged to participate, as our activities are a great way to bond and instill a sense of stewardship for the natural world in children. Join San Diego Botanic Garden in unity with friends and colleagues from around the globe for the Garden’s annual Survivor Tree Ceremony on Wednesday, August 6 at 11 a.m. Descended from a mother tree that survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan 80 years ago, this special ginkgo tree was planted at San Diego Botanic Garden in 2023. The ceremony will feature opening remarks from Ari Novy, SDBG President and CEO, and a moment of silence at 11:15 a.m., the exact time the bomb was dropped. Attendees will also be invited to participate in a community wish-writing activity. This significant tree is a part of a years-long partnership with Green Legacy Hiroshima, a global initiative that distributes seeds and saplings from Hiroshima’s survivor trees to promote peace, remembrance, and resilience around the world.
