The North Coast Strings is a dynamic string orchestra program designed for adult learners of the violin, viola, cello, and upright bass. The spring session offers the following group sections: Beginner 1 Rehearses on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. This section is designed for beginners with minimal or no experience playing a stringed instrument. Focusing on foundational skills, participants will learn basic techniques, how to read music and the joy of ensemble playing in a supportive and encouraging environment. Beginner 2 Rehearses on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. This section is for players who have studied a stringed instrument for a year or two and are ready to take the next step in their musical journey. Participants will build on their foundational skills, improving their technique and musicality while learning to play together as a cohesive group. Orchestra One Rehearses on Tuesdays from 5:30 p.m. –6:45 p.m. Orchestra One is the intermediate level of the program, perfect for musicians who have been learning their instrument for several years and are comfortable reading music and playing in multiple positions. The repertoire is thoughtfully selected to challenge early- to mid-intermediate players while ensuring a rewarding and enjoyable experience. North Coast Strings Orchestra Rehearses on Tuesdays from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. The North Coast Strings Orchestra is the pinnacle of our program, led by the inspirational and award-winning conductor Alyze Dreiling. Designed for advanced players, this ensemble offers the chance to perform classical and contemporary repertoire in its original, unadapted form. Thursday–Friday, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. February 27 & 28 (2 Days, 8 total hours of instruction) On location at Barnett Ranch Outdoor studies are the key to painting successful landscapes in the studio. Plein air painting is an excellent way to observe color, light, and aerial perspective. This class will focus on composition and color mixing with a limited palette. Each day the workshop will begin with a demo and conclude with a group critique. February should be a great month for painting plein air at Barnett Ranch; with long views, open country, and grasslands beginning to turn green. All levels are welcome in this workshop. Meet up at the Barnett Ranch County Preserve Staging Area: 1500 Deviney Lane at San Vicente Road, Ramona, CA 92065. Materials: portable easel; four 8” x 10” or 6” x 8”, good quality canvas boards; half-dozen brushes, white bristle flat or filbert, # 2, #4, #6. One medium-size steel palette knife; small, pointed round brush for detail #2–#4. Paper towels; odorless turpentine; small jar for turpentine, wood palette; oil paints: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium Cadmium Lemon, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Permalba White, Raw Umber, Cadmium Orange. We will meet up in the Plaza Panama in front of the Timken Art Museum. Using different techniques and mediums, we will find fun ways to approach an often daunting subject. Students will be encouraged to bring photos of family, friends—even pets. We will discuss the best kinds of photos to use and how to use the ones you have even if they aren’t the best quality. There will be a model for one session, and we will try self-portraiture. This is an interesting way to improve your skills, find some new ones, and have fun while you are at it. Materials: A 9” x 12” pad of mixed-media paper; soft vine charcoal (willow is the best); woodless graphite pencil, 6B, 8B, or 9B (the higher the number the better); pencil sharpener; kneaded eraser. Other materials will be discussed in class, and the instructor will bring some supplies for students to try and share.
