This class is perfect for beginners and those who want to refine their techniques through a guided approach. Throughout the course, students will learn fundamental throwing techniques, trimming, altering forms, and glazing, gaining confidence on the wheel while creating functional pottery. Panel Information: "Diplomacy and Lucha Libre: Same Battles, Different Arenas" As part of the exhibit "Sangre, Sudor y Mito: The Art and Tradition of Mexican Lucha Libre," the multifaceted Mexican-American professional wrestler Thunder Rosa and the Consul General of Mexico in San Diego, Alicia Kerber, will hold a conversation about the challenges that Mexican women face in careers as different as professional wrestlers and career diplomats. The history of Mexican luchadoras as part of the lucha libre universe was neglected and overlooked, with female matches being banned for more than 30 years. Similarly, Mexican women diplomats have faced discrimination through the years, with fewer opportunities and unbalanced representation. Informed by her background in astrophysics, Melissa Walter’s mixed-media practice is deeply rooted in observation, research, and the translation of scientific concepts into abstract, minimalist works that investigate humanity’s place within the cosmos. Her process relies on conceptually informed mediums and techniques ranging from repetitive action and fine detail to digital renderings and sculptural abstractions. This focus on process is reflected in the work of Juan Cabrera, whose process involves manipulating found photographic source material to create works on paper depicting architectural dream spaces. Through his practice in watercolor and woodblock printmaking, he investigates emotional attachment to architectural interior space, layering disparate textures and images to reveal hidden tensions. Together, the work of these artists explores the nuances of memory as subjective experience, interrogating the possibility of objectivity and the limits of representation.
