June 14 - Sept. 1, 2024 San Diego and Tijuana have magnificent sacred buildings that effectively illustrate the history of modern architecture. Leading architects throughout the century designed buildings of the highest quality. Some of these architects had national reputations, such as Irving J. Gill, Richard Neutra and Charles Moore, others, like Robert Mosher and Robert Wellington Quigley, were local. Together, they have created a wonderfully diverse collection of sacred architecture. The exhibition will lead viewers through the major architectural movements of the twentieth century and introduce ideas and theology which have shaped sacred buildings in the region and highlight the work of contemporary architectural photographers Maha Bazzari, Estefany Maya, and Darren Bradley. In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident artist Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too. * The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere. * We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. * Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages. Join us for fun conversational classes of Hebrew for beginners with our experienced teacher Orli Moses. Knowledge of the Hebrew alphabet is not required as we will use transliterated scripts to focus on greetings and topical chats all while gaining the confidence of proper Hebrew pronunciation in a Hebrew speaking environment. Teacher: Orli Moses – Vilensky Born and raised in California, she grew up in a Hebrew-speaking household and holds dual Master’s degrees in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TEOSL), and Master of International Business Administration (MIBA) from the World Union of Jewish Studies (WUJS) in Arad, Israel. She has been teaching Hebrew and Jewish Studies for the last 30 years and previously served as Director of Kesher Kef, an afterschool Hebrew enrichment program.
