The San Diego Diplomacy Council is excited to announce the 2024 Global Leadership Youth Program (GLYP), a summer enrichment program designed for high school students passionate about global issues and leadership. Running from June 24 to July 19, 2024, the program will cover critical topics such as environmental sustainability, 21st century peacebuilding, and universal dignity. Participants will benefit from guest speakers, diplomacy simulations, group projects, and cultural activities. This immersive program not only builds critical thinking and negotiation skills but also fosters a global perspective, preparing students for future success. “The Global Leadership Youth Program is a pivotal experience for highschoolers who are interested in International Relations and/or interested in having a career that is impactful on a global scale,” says San Diego Diplomacy Council Program Officer, Carmelina Herrera. “GLYP gives students the opportunity to engage in important topics such as environmentalism and civil activism through an international lens.” Sessions run in week-long modules at the UC San Diego Park & Market Campus in downtown San Diego from 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. PDT: June 24 - 28: Introduction to International Relations: Peacebuilding in the 21st Century July 8 - 12: Environmental Sustainability: Cultivating Tomorrow in a Changing World July 15 - 19: Human Rights at Home and Abroad: Exploring Universal Dignity Students will receive a Certificate of Excellence in Global Leadership upon completing the program, a prestigious addition to college applications and resumes, and may be eligible to receive college credit through the University of California, San Diego’s Continuing Education Units. One thousand students descended on the park Thursday to learn about everything from how blubber keeps animals warm to how roller coasters work.

Indigo—a varied plant family that grows worldwide and the deep, blue dye it produces—has a long and multifaceted history of cultivation, production, and distribution. "Blue Gold" combines science, craft, and history to explore this color’s complex past and present. Indigo’s beauty and ubiquity have eclipsed the unpleasant realities of its growth and manufacture, including hard labor and pollution, and its association with colonialism and slavery. As a pigment, indigo has been assigned protective properties, healing powers, and dangerous qualities that have shaped its uses in craft and the arts. The exhibition highlights the roles of botany, chemistry, medicine, ecology, and economics in indigo cultivation. Contemporary craftspeople and artists working with indigo, such as Laura Kina and Porfirio Gutierrez, address questions about the sustainability of indigo, its problematic legacies, and technological alternatives to manual processing. From the KPBS/Arts newsletter: Local artist Melissa Walter and the New Mexico-based mixed media artist Manuel Alejandro Rodríguez-Delgado will both open separate exhibitions at Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego-North campus in Encinitas. While Walter's work is always fascinating and science-informed, for this show she is also debuting some experimental animation. Rodríguez-Delgado will show installation work that combines drawing, sculpture and collage. Opens with a reception from 4-8 p.m. on Aug. 17.
