  • Looking for a unique way to bolster your creativity and infuse your writing projects with new energy? Using images as inspiration can help fire up those juices, often leading you in unexpected directions. Working with personally selected visuals can be a fascinating entry point for unlocking and accessing ideas, and can help bring forth your most authentic voice. Join Kimberly Lee for four delicious weeks of writing with SoulCollage®, an expressive arts method requiring no “artistic ability,” just the willingness to try something new. Participants will be directed through the calming process of making a SoulCollage® card each week, and then we’ll use these creations as the basis for responding to imaginative writing prompts. With attention to character development, point of view, setting, plot, dialogue, tension and obstacles, plus mood and color, we’ll explore how the practice of SoulCollage® can be an uplifting muse, a gentle guide on the writing path, no matter what our goals may be. Whether you’re a fiction writer or memoirist, you’ll find this process inspirational and will leave with many takeaways for your writing journey. By the end, you may have the beginnings of a short piece or a number of concrete elements that can be adapted for a longer project. This series will be conducted according to the Amherst Writers and Artists method, founded by Pat Schneider. Participants will have the choice to share their work and receive feedback as to what was strong and resonant in their freshly-written words. We’ll create a safe environment for play and exploration, the foundation of creativity. Stay Connected with SoulCollage®! Facebook | Instagram | X

  • Linda Blair, popular local lecturer, is back by popular demand at the Athenaeum in La Jolla. If you like Cezanne, Matisse, and Van Gogh, this is her lecture series for you. This new generation of artists emerged in the 1880s. Like runners in a relay race, the Impressionists handed off the baton of artistic innovation to this these artists today viewed as giants of European art history. Each Post-Impressionist artist pursued his own unique artistic vision, but all were united in adopting the Impressionists’ conviction that art should not be filtered through ideology, intellect or “schools of art.” Thus liberated from constraint, art, they contended, should be independent, the exclusive product of the artist’s imagination and skill. Matisse and Picasso both claimed that Cezanne was “the father of us all,” and he does stand at the cusp between traditional, realistic art and 20th century abstraction. When Cezanne and Van Gogh met in Paris in 1886, they despised each other, a contempt that spilled over in their opinions of each other’s work. Cezanne’s forms are solid and immutable; Vincent’s inanimate objects dance with a kinetic energy. We can’t find Cezanne, the man, in his paintings; in Van Gogh’s canvases we can’t avoid him. Unlike the very conventional Matisse, Van Gogh’s life was one of alienation. Keenly aware of the isolation his odd behavior caused, he poured his longing for relationships, for human communion, into his paintings. Of his friend and archrival, Picasso said, “All things considered, there is only Matisse.” In his own words, Matisse sought to create “an art of balance, of purity and serenity, devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter.” Stay Connected on Social Media! • The San Diego World Affairs Council presents the Distinguished Speaker Series featuring: Marie Arana DATE/TIME: Thursday, March 7, 2024, 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. VENUE: Hall of Nations, Balboa Park About Marie Arana: Marie Arana was born in Lima, Peru. She is the author of the memoir American Chica, a finalist for the National Book Award; two novels, Cellophane and Lima Nights; the prizewinning biography Bolivar; Silver, Sword, and Stone, a narrative history of Latin America; and The Writing Life, a collection from her well-known column for The Washington Post. She is the inaugural Literary Director of the Library of Congress and lives in Washington, DC, and Lima, Peru. About the Presentation: “To tell the truth, we have no name. We never did,” writes Marie Arana, “We were simply tribes of this hemisphere, inheritors of a natural world… We gave ourselves a multitude of names. Thousands of years later, when we were invaded and conquered, first by Spain, then by a battery of occupiers and usurpers, we became colonies to power—united by the boot, the sword, the crown, the cross, and the Spanish language.” In LATINOLAND: A Portrait of America’s Largest and Least Understood Minority (Simon & Schuster; February 20, 2024), the award-winning author and historian Marie Arana offers readers a sweeping, personal portrait of the largest racial and ethnic minority in the United States. “Latinos” does not represent a single group – they were some of the earliest immigrants to what is now known as the US, and they are some of the country’s newest arrivals; they are White, Black, Indigenous, and Asian; they are domestic workers, day laborers, successful artists, corporate CEOs, and US senators. Once overwhelmingly Catholic, they are now increasingly Protestant and Evangelical. Once faithfully Democratic, they now vote Republican in growing numbers. In LATINOLAND, Arana tells stories that often go ignored, encapsulating Latinos’ “grand diversity that defies any one label.” Based on prodigious research, hundreds of interviews, and Marie Arana’s own life experience as a Latina, LATINOLAND unabashedly celebrates the resilience, character, diversity, and little-known history of our largest and fastest-growing minority. The author of several award-winning books – American Chica, Bolivar, and most recently, Silver, Sword, and Stone – Arana is a beloved member of the literary community, serving as the inaugural Literary Director of the Library of Congress and previously a columnist for the Washington Post. Arana has devoted her career to exploring Latinos’ origins, identities, and histories in the United States, and is uniquely qualified to tell this massive story. Special Bonus Opportunity from our Community Partner, Classics 4 Kids, below!
