Join Southern Caregiver Resource Center at our office for an afternoon of art and networking! We invite community members and affiliated organizations alike to the unveiling of “Portraits in Caregiving”, a series of photographs honoring the caregiving experience. This exhibit captures the essence of family and unconditional love through intimate and tender moments found in the routine of caregiving. Guests will have the opportunity to speak to the photographers as well as the featured caregivers. SCRC’s staff will also be present to give you a tour of our office space, share information about our vital support services for caregivers, and discuss professional networking and corporate partnership opportunities. Artists enjoy painting in “the golden hour” because everything becomes progressively more interesting and exciting as shadows lengthen and one is forced to work quickly. Daily demonstrations in acrylic, oil, pastel, and watercolor will be short to allow students time to work. On the first day we will meet at Sunset Point Park on the grass. Subsequent locations will be based on students’ preferences. Please note that there may be locations without immediate access to restroom facilities. Please plan ahead. Since instruction is individual, artists of any level may participate and paint whatever type of scene they prefer. No matter how warm it is when you leave home, bring a jacket anyway. DIRECTIONS to Sunset Point Park: From I-5 take Sea World Drive West to Ingraham Street/West Mission Bay Drive. Take West Mission Drive. Once you are on West Mission Bay Drive, turn right at Dana Landing Road, and then immediately turn left into the Sunset Point Park parking lot. Materials: Students should bring their preferred mediums or buy recommended supplies that follow: Only buy what you plan to use. For those using pastels: Rembrandt, box of 90 or 180, or NuPastel, box of 96; Canson-brand pastel paper #429, 426, or 431 (quartered); foam core drawing board at least 1/2” larger than the size of paper you plan to use; four clips to hold paper; paper towels. For those using oils: French easel or lap easel; stretched canvas or canvas board, up to 16” x 20”; brushes #1, 2, 4, 6, 8 (two of each); odorless Gamsol thinner; small cup or jar; rags; small hand mirror (for seeing errors in reverse); a warm and cool tube of at least seven colors: Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Raw Sienna, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Ivory Black, Titanium White. Optional: Raw Umber, Scarlet Lake. For those using acrylics: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters. For those using watercolors: at least the same range of colors as the oil painters—but white is optional; flat or pointed brushes; watercolor blocks; chair or easel; Kleenex; 1/2 or 3/4” masking tape to crop image. Please be sure to bring an extra canvas or extra paper in case you have time to begin a second painting. Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty bring to life Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a young dreamer with a big imagination—Jojo. Narrated by the mischievous Cat in the Hat, the story follows Horton as he discovers a speck of dust containing the Whos, including Jojo, a child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.” As Horton protects the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, he also cares for an abandoned egg left behind by the carefree Mayzie La Bird. Though faced with ridicule, peril, and even a trial, Horton remains steadfast—with Gertrude McFuzz by his side, never losing faith in him.
