Paul Getty Museum The Timken Museum of Art's Lovers in a Park (1758) epitomizes the art of François Boucher, one of the most prolific and successful artists in eighteenth-century France. But what does the painting actually represent, and what would viewers at the time have made of it? Join Richard Rand for a fascinating evening exploring the complexities and contradictions of one of the Timken's most compelling works of art, painted at a key moment in European history. Richard Rand is the Associate Director for Collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Previously, he served as the Robert and Martha Berman Lipp Senior Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. He is also a lecturer in art history in the Williams College/Clark Graduate Program in the History of Art. He has held curatorial appointments at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1989-1992) and the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College (1992-1997). This lecture and reception is taking place in conjunction with the Timken's extensive onsite conservation of François Boucher's Lovers in a Park - the Museum's first interactive conservation in public view. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10:00 a.m. Balboa Park features numerous trees from around the world that have monument status in the State of California. These “Guinness Book of Record Flora” are frequently noted on the internet and on various lists of amazing trees. The tour will point out their unusual features and provide background on their uses in the places where they originated around the globe. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10:00 a.m. Modeled after a famous garden in Seville, Spain, Balboa Park’s historic Alcazar Garden features regularly changing floral displays, colorful tile work, box hedged walkways, a pergola, and two fountains. The entire garden is nicely shaded by a variety of trees from around the world, including the massive fig tree towering over one of the most photographed areas in the park. Many of the tree species have become so popular since being introduced in Balboa Park, they are now found across San Diego and our coastal region. The walking tour will reveal how they got here, why they are so successful, and their historical stories.

On Sunday, Feb. 18, 2024 mycophiles, educators, chefs, supportive businesses and dedicated mushroom amateurs, enthusiasts and professionals will gather at our Annual Fungus Fair in San Diego’s Balboa Park, continuing our mission to help educate our community, exchanging knowledge and celebrating all things fungi. The San Diego Mycological Society was established in 1997 and our group gathers for the many facets of fungi such as culinary, cultivation, identification, photography and art, ecology and more. We have monthly seminars, conduct classes, lead forays to find mushrooms, assist in mushroom identification, and share joy in commensality at member potlucks and chef prepared full course mushroom dinners. Come join us on March 30 for our own version of “Saturday morning cartoons!” At Toons & Tunes, children and their families can enjoy a screening of classic cartoons at the beautiful Balboa Theatre. The classic cartoons will be accompanied by a pipe organ, but this is not the austere, formal sound you may think of. The Wonder Morton theatre organ has dozens of “voices,” which can imitate chimes, violins, a choir, and more! Theatre organist Ken Double will bring this whimsical instrument to life for our youngest audience members. San Diego Civic Dance Arts (SDCDA) has often been viewed as the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department’s “best-kept secret.” For over 80 years, through the use of public, nonprofit and volunteer partnerships, SDCDA has provided an accessible, affordable world-class dance program to San Diego. For the past 25 years, Andrea Feier, a Julliard trained dancer herself, has led SDCDA. Collage is held over the first three weekends of February. “I love how the City makes dance accessible and affordable to anyone who wishes to participate,” said Andrea. “The passion of the dance staff who have found their calling teaching for this program and have made it their life's work teaching for Civic Dance Arts is incredible. Working with dance staff and other City workers dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives is inspiring.” The passion her staff have for the program is evident. Andrea noted that several of her team members have worked with the program for over 20 years, and Dance Recreation Leader Kathy Landry is in her 44th year of service. “We have been changing lives one step at a time.
