One of the most prestigious juried shows in San Diego, the Athenaeum’s 31st Annual Juried Exhibition will be on view this summer in the Clayes Gallery. Nearly 300 artists entered 900 works for consideration. Juror Isabel Casso, Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, selected the final 25 artists and 35 works to exhibit. The exhibition will continue in the Rotunda Gallery. Prizewinners, including the recipient of the Leslie Von Kolb Memorial Award, will be announced at the opening reception on Friday, July 14, which will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Artists in the exhibition are Elizabeth Burger, Dillon Chapman, Morgan DeLuna, Raul Espinoza, Angela Figueroa, Kaori Fukuyama, Sarah Garcia, Neville Greene, Sam Grenier, Marina Grize, Becky Guttin, Andres Hernandez, Terri Hughes, Mayce Keeler, Gianna LaPonte, Monica Loss, Maria Mathioudakis, Leslie Nemour, Oriana Poindexter, Vincent Robles, Amir Saadiq, Sean Sarmiento, Michael Upton, Leslye Villaseñor, and Lizzie Zelter.  Juror: Isabel Casso, Assistant Curator, Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego Isabel Casso is the Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Casso’s recent projects include a special exhibition with Carmen Argote and a retrospective of Celia Álvarez Muñoz. Previously, she was the Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, where she organized Grain of a Hand: Drawings with Graphite and a solo exhibition of Chilean artist Alfredo Jaar. She has held positions at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Casso earned an MA in art history from Williams College and a BA in art history and economics from Loyola Marymount University. The exhibition can be viewed in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (1008 Wall Street, La Jolla, CA 92037) during open hours, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Appointments are not required. For the sixth year, Fandom, the world’s largest fan platform, is bringing back their annual bash to the con — and it just so happens to be among the best parties at the convention. This year’s event will be on Thursday, July 20 from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. at FLOAT atop the Hard Rock Hotel, for an evening of live music, plenty of entertainment, interactive photo booths, giveaways, and more. K-pop group NCT DOJAEJUNG will be headling the party. The group also has a new original graphic novel, "NCT 127: Limitless," with Z2 Comics, which you can pre-order now. The word rococo is a humorous variation on the term rocaille meaning rockwork. Stylistically the concept refers to interior decoration which consists mainly in the use of C scrolls and counter-curves. The ideas behind the rococo emerged in France after the death of Louis XIV around 1715. Rococo thus developed as a reaction to the excessive splendors and pomp of Versailles and the overindulgences associated with life under the Roi Soleil or Sun King. Some rococo artists however continued to document life among the aristocracy. Rococo painting and decor were more focused on beautifying smaller residences that began to spring up in Paris. Porcelain, gold, and silversmith's work was also created to complement these new interiors. The characteristics of small curves, prettiness, gaiety, and pastel colors can be seen in the paintings of this period. Two of the most significant artists working in France at this time were Antoine Watteau and Francois Boucher. This docent-led lecture will focus on these artists and others who gained recognition during the 18th century. *This is a virtual event that will take place over zoom. RSVP here!
