  • The San Diego History Center, in partnership with the San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art, presents the exhibition "San Diego’s Lost Neighborhoods" at our Balboa Park museum. Using augmented reality, oral histories, and archival materials, the exhibition examines how discriminatory policies—including redlining, freeway construction, and gentrification—displaced communities and documents the human impact of that loss. Featured neighborhoods include Julian, City Heights, the Gaslamp Quarter, La Jolla, Chollas View, Southcrest, and MLK Way; the exhibition invites citywide reflection on this often overlooked chapter of our city’s past. • The Día de los Muertos celebration at the Sherman Heights Community Center is a weeks-long community festivity that preserves the Day of the Dead tradition, itself a millennial practice. This celebration began in 1994, when Sr. Domingo Sandoval, a local resident approached the Center requesting a space to create an altar in honor of his loved ones during Día de los Muertos. Over the years the festivity has grown to include onsite community altars, front-yard altars throughout the neighborhood, craft workshops, online tutorials and videos, an activity guide, student tours and food tastings, a procession and fundraising event. The tradition is a joyous occasion when the memory of our ancestors and the continuity of life is celebrated. Festivities run from mid Oct- Nov. 2nd and are open to the public. • Feeding San Diego, the region’s only Feeding America partner food bank, is calling on the community to help sustain and expand its growing School Pantry Program at the start of the 2025-26 school year. After adding an additional 21 school pantries to the program last school year, it is now operating at 62 schools across San Diego County. The non-profit is delivering nutritious groceries directly to students and families starting this month during back-to-school season, as high inflation continues to impact kids living in low-income households. With schools continuing to approach the non-profit to be part of the program, it's clear that there is an urgent need for support with basic needs on school campuses across the county. The School Pantry Program is a proven, longstanding hunger-relief program that provides nutritious food to students and their families on school campuses at no cost to them. In addition to the 62 schools, there is a waitlist of 58 schools who are waiting to join the program, representing thousands of households who need support bringing meals home.
