Bring the entire family to Free Second Sunday for our free family series, Play Day! Join us for a light-filled art activity inspired by the Light and Space movement and artists in MCASD’s permanent collection. Together, we will create magical, glitter paper lanterns using parchment paper, string, and cellophane, that will brighten and warm winter nights. Art Activity: Create paper lanterns filled with color and light. Schedule: At 11 a.m., explore Light and Space works in MCASD’s permanent collection through a kid friendly tour. From 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., enjoy music by a local DJ, get cozy in the book nook, sketch with water, and get book recommendations from the LIbrarian on the Go. At Noon and 1 p.m., sit and experience the soothing sounds of crystal bowls as they quiet your mind and lead you into a relaxed and introspective state. At 12:30 p.m., listen to stories, songs, and rhymes in Storytime with Librarian on the Go. *Museum admission is free from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. for all visitors, with Play Day offerings happening between 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. No RSVPs are required for Play Day admission. About Play Day Play Day is a monthly event at the Museum designed for families to explore art together. Activities include special tours, hands-on projects, and at-your-own-pace guides. A house is more than a container for the things we spend a lifetime collecting, storing, arranging, and insuring. It is the repository of our memories, the life we spend there. We will make an accordion book with text and images of your home and/or family members or ancestors that reflect your perceptions, memories, family relations, and personal history. The structure of the pages will reflect the book’s subject, with openings that represent doors, windows, and the movement from room to room inside a house. Materials: Cutting knife, stylus (for scoring), sharp pencils, a good eraser (Pink Pearl is good), glue (UHU glue stick or PVA & brush or small roller), 12” ruler, scissors. In addition, you will want to bring room layout drawings, photographs, and/or black-and-white-on-paper printouts of your home or other drawings of the interior or exterior (sizes to be emailed once you have registered). Optional/recommended: 12” centering ruler, bench hook with cutting mat (9” x 12” cutting mat size is ideal), bone folder. Materials for the pages and cover will be provided to create the books. This eight-week workshop style course introduces students to a popular and fun printmaking technique of silk screen. No prior experience in printmaking is necessary. Students will create vibrant, multicolor prints using water-based silk-screen materials while exploring their own style and applying this popular method to their own imagery. The direct, on-screen stencil techniques, such as screen filler/drawing fluid or wax crayon, as well as indirect, photo-emulsion methods of drawing on Mylar will be shown, and digital file preparation will be explored. A stencil monotype-printing and mixed-media approaches will be covered. Students will learn how to set up their own DIY studio and will learn all aspects of preparation, setup, and production of fine art prints. Materials: Ink and studio materials will be provided. This is a unique opportunity to study with two accomplished and warmhearted artist-educators in the same course. Ken and Stephanie are both well known for their ability to help each person find their own unique drawing abilities. Each week there will be a life model. On day one, Ken will introduce a simplified approach to gesture drawing and the fundamentals of figure and head construction. During Weeks 2 and 3, Ken will go deeper into the importance of gesture drawing in relation to constructing and composing longer poses. During the final three weeks, Stephanie will continue to build on Ken’s lessons but will include longer poses that will allow students time to incorporate the basics into an actual process of drawing or painting more finished figures and portraits. Materials: You do not need to buy everything on this list. Only buy materials that relate to the medium you plan to work with, or if you are more advanced, bring your own supplies. On day one you will only need newsprint, a drawing board, vine charcoal, kneaded eraser, and one colored pastel for accents. Charcoal: Soft vine charcoal; 4B charcoal pencil; kneaded eraser; smooth newsprint; drawing board; rags or paper towels. In this class, Jeff teaches how to efficiently begin and complete a painting. He says, “I focus on a purposeful approach to moving through blocking in an underpainting and understanding how to finish it without overworking. We try to work loose and quickly, so the process of painting is enjoyable.” Materials: Paint: (I like Winsor & Newton) Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light (or Pale Hue), Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Titanium White. Brushes: #2, #4, #6 (flats). I recommend Robert Simmons Signet brand. Supports: Canvas panels (buy bundle of five for the best price). For class we will be working in small format, 8” x 10” or 9” x 12”. (Please no larger than 12” x 16”.) Other: palette (disposable paper palette is fine); odorless mineral spirits in solvent tank or small tight lid jar; small metal palette knife. If you already have paint and this equipment or similar, perfect. Most important is that you have the four paint colors mentioned, especially Permanent Alizarin Crimson.
