SAN DIEGO, CA - The San Diego River Artists’ Alliance (SDRAA) will exhibit work celebrating the San Diego River and its ecosystem in a exhibition titled “Ebb and Flow: Art Along the River” at the Point Loma Public Library October 3 - December 30, 2024. - 4 p.m. A portion of the sales will be donated to the San Diego River Park Foundation (SDRPF). SDRAA is a collective of twenty-two visual and 3D artists from around San Diego County who hike and spend time along the San Diego River from its source in mountains near Julian to the ocean. The artists create artwork about the San Diego River and its ecosystem to celebrate its history, beauty and promise and to encourage the public to connect with the variety of experiences available along the river. The work includes acrylic, photography, mixed media, glass, watercolor, oil, color pencil, fiber arts, paper, ceramic, and polymer clay. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium. You may leave your work at your station for the entire workshop. Materials: The material fee includes three small wood-panel supports, 8” x 8”; R & F encaustic medium; some R & F wax colors; R & F wax colors sticks; heated palette; some brushes; heat guns; some collage materials; some paints; images; things to embed; mark-making tools; oil pastels; collage materials; transfer materials; paints; gloves; scissors. We will paint from a life model on location at La Jolla Shores. Students are also welcome to draw instead of paint from the model if they prefer. Materials: Oil paints: Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Lemon,* Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White (large tube,) Cadmium Orange Pure. Brushes: Robert Simmons white natural bristle flat # 40F, sizes 2,3, 4, and 6, and a small, pointed sable brush for detail; small steel palette knife. Fridays, 9 a.m. - 12:30p.m. October 4–25 (4 weeks, 14 total hours of instruction) On location at Children’s Pool in La Jolla Working outdoors in the landscape is always inspiring—each moment and every place is unique and beautiful. Plein air painting is an excellent way to learn about oil painting technique and triumph over creative issues while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow artists. The class will emphasize value study, landscape composition, and color theory using a limited palette taught through demonstration and individual instruction.
