Badfish is a sonic house party complete with plenty of gyrating fans sipping libations and enjoying other various extra-curricular activities.. Badfish is feel-good music. For 22 years, the Rhode Island-based band – Joel Hanks on bass, Scott Begin on drums, Pat Downes on vocals and guitar, Danny Torgersen on horns, keyboards, and guitars – have successfully paid tribute to Sublime, the short-lived but influential California group that brought ska-punk and reggae-rock to the mainstream. Badfish’s heartfelt celebration of Sublime’s musical spirit and legacy is so sought-after that they’ve headlined theaters, sold out shows, and played 15-20 gigs a month. But now, Badfish is more. After two decades of Sublime reverence, it’s time for Badfish originality. Badfish is releasing their own songs in early 2024. Their Sublime repertoire will be augmented by some fresh original tracks that promise to blend seamlessly together. And now it’s time for the “High With You” tour. Yet as the years have gone by and we’ve gotten to witness our little show turn into somewhat of a movement within the scene, we are at the point where we feel we have something of real heart and value to add not only to our show but to the American reggae scene.” That means you’ll hear Sublime staples “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way” intertwined with Badfish’s own groove heavy “High With You,” “Surf Party Lord,” “Trippin’,” and the in-your-face swagger of “FYPM.” The new tunes are vibrant, brimming with reggae beats and rock-punk strut. Resistance is futile, you’re going to move. “With the kinetic energy that the band has amassed over years of performing, the ideas just started to flow out of the blue and we were lucky enough to capture them,” says Begin. “Perspective is a great tool in music composition, and we’ve got plenty of that by now. When it feels right, it feels right…and these songs sure feel right.” Badfish’s “High With You” tour is shaping up to be the biggest of the band’s career. Dates are already set for late December through mid-February with more gigs to be added. SDSU’s School of Theater, Television and Film will host a selection of short horror films made by student filmmakers. Dr. Matthew Desmond, renowned Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius,” has made understanding the causes of poverty his life’s work. He was catapulted into the national spotlight as a leading authority on modern American poverty when his Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City,” made its debut in 2016. His work has been supported by the Gates, Horowitz, Ford, JBP, MacArthur, and National Science, Russell Sage, and W.T. Grant Foundations, as well as the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. In his latest book, “Poverty, by America,” Desmond puts forth a guide to eradicating American poverty. Join us on Thursday, December 14 for a discussion with Desmond on the solutions to poverty he posits in his new book, released earlier this year. This discussion is part of the Helen Edison Lecture Series by the UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies. As part of the Playhouse’s commitment to being a home for artists to develop new plays and musicals, Playhouse Artistic Director Christopher Ashley created the DNA New Work Series in 2013. DNA offers playwrights and directors the opportunity to develop a script by providing rehearsal time, space and resources, culminating in public readings. This process gives audiences a closer look at the play development process, while allowing the Playhouse to develop work and foster relationships with both established and up-and-coming playwrights. Distilled from hundreds of hours of personal recordings and interviews, this project shares some of his most beautiful and engaging recordings around the globe and his personal struggle with hearing loss. Akashi studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste - Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main and received her BFA at Otis College of Art and Design in 2006.   The artist has presented solo projects at Aspen Art Museum (2020) and the Sculpture Center, New York (2017). Other notable group exhibitions include the Clark Art Institute (2021); Hammer Museum’s biennial, Made in L.A. (2016); Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit (2017); Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, France (2017); The Jewish Museum, New York (2016); Can’t Reach Me There, Midway Contemporary Art, Minneapolis (2015).
