Create a unique Bandsaw Box! Sunday, December 21, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Bandsaw boxes are beginner-friendly and have a variety of uses. Once you make one you can make many! In this 7-hour workshop, students will create a box made from a single block of wood using the bandsaw. Students will learn to design and create organic forms on the bandsaw while observing wood grain and learning to make cross cuts and rip cuts. We will cover shop safety and methods for cutting and gluing your box. Students will also learn sanding best practices and how to achieve a perfect finish using beeswax. We welcome all makers, from beginners to advanced. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring your own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. The Gratitude Collective is a community of women who support KPBS’ vision to connect, reflect and serve the San Diego region. Members of the Gratitude Collective are superfans of KPBS and prioritize their philanthropy in support of our commitment to local news, arts and culture, children’s programming, and community engagement and representation via dialogue and events. The Gratitude Collective provides a space for lifelong learning and connection via quarterly experiences such as speaking engagements with women leaders in various fields, social events and KPBS community meetings.

Learn Plain Weave, Clasped Weft & Hemstitching! Saturday, December 6, from 2-5 p.m. Have you wanted to dive into the mindful, rhythmic, magic of weaving? In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. Beginners, as well as those with weaving experience are welcome. No experience necessary. Landscape Painting: Problem Solving and Critique Pat Kelly Saturday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. November 1 (1 day, 4 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio $100/$120 This discussion-only workshop will help students improve their landscape painting by learning how to solve problems and critique their own work. For more experienced painters, it is an opportunity for discussion and a springboard for developing a personal style. We will look at student landscape paintings two ways: - Virtual: Students submit a digital image of one of their landscape paintings before the workshop. - Real Time: Students also bring the painting to the workshop for critique. You will have an opportunity to ask questions about your work and learn how to self-critique. Pat will critique with live digital examples using submitted images. The digital format is especially valuable for demonstrating corrections, visualizing suggestions, and generating discussion. Saturday, December 6, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 4-hour brush making workshop! We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. You will hone your carving skills by adding curves and texture to your piece. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spoke shaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. We will also discuss design principles, functional applications, the properties of wood, and brush materials such as Tampico fibers. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a unique brush to be used in the home, the shop, or as a beautiful sculpture or gift. Materials are provided. Learn to Carve a Spoon! Sunday, November 16, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Beginning spoon carving. In this introduction course of carving Woodworker Paul Maschka will be sharing the ancient style of green wood hand carving with simple but very precise hand tools–a small carving axe, straight blade carving knife and a curved hook knife. With proper techniques, green wood can be intricately sculpted into extremely beautiful, functional and unique pieces of art. Paul specializes in Viking-era cutlery. This Scandinavian style is still being crafted around the world. In this workshop, students will be creating a straight tea spoon or straight cooking spoon. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. Tools and chopping blocks will be available for purchase after the class. No experience necessary.
