  • Learn to create your own authentic Austrian Strudel! Sunday, March 2, from 2-5 p.m. In this hands-on baking class, you learn how to make authentic Austrian Apple Strudel. You will have a ready-to-bake Strudel for you to bring home to enjoy. During our class, you stretch the dough paper thin across a table until it’s covered in a blanket of dough! We make a simple but delicious apple filling for your Strudel, it’s surprising how little sugar we need for this dessert. You’ll love the final part: rolling up the Strudel with the help of a tablecloth! Students will need to bring a baking sheet of their own to transport their strudel home for baking. We will have freshly baked Strudel to savor with coffee while your instructor shares lots of tips and ideas for more fillings.   • Kevin Inman Thursday, May 22 from 2–5 p.m. (1 day, 3 total hours of instruction) On location in Sherman Heights This plein air painting class is taught on location in beautiful San Diego. Enjoy the golden afternoon light in the vibrant downtown neighborhood of Sherman Heights. The Villa Montezuma is a 19th century Victorian mansion set on a hill overlooking the city skyline and the bay. Join San Diego landscape painter Kevin Inman to learn how to paint spontaneously, simplify a complex subject, and enjoy the moment. Topics include color mixing, design, and how to let go of your inner critic. Materials: Recommended oil or acrylic colors (Gamblin and Rembrandt paints): Limited palette: Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Cadmium Yellow Medium, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. This palette saves money but limits your options in advanced painting techniques. Basic palette: Cadmium Yellow Medium (or Hue), Cadmium Yellow Deep (or Hue), Cadmium Red Medium (or Hue), Alizarin Crimson Permanent, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue Hue, Titanium White, Burnt Umber, or preferred alternatives. Recommended but optional palette: Ivory Black, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre. Brushes: a range of brushes from #2 on up. I prefer hog bristle flats and filberts. Our projects are geared to build and hone skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, comprehension + exploration of a variety of materials. Projects and depth of craft exploration are matched up to the child’s age and ability. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station, and they’re camp is ending as ours begins, we are happy to walk your child from their camp to the studio.   • Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! Saturday & Sunday, March 8 & 9 from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon, like carving safety, honing/sharpening, tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood, hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle, carving out the handle, sanding, and finish. This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary.
