This two-part program brings together music, poetry, and performance for an evening of boundary-crossing storytelling. In Act One, improviser Wilfrido Terrazas and poet Ronnie Yates explore the liminal space where their disciplines meet—Terrazas’s music shaped by the Mexico City poetry scene, Yates’s poetry by Houston’s improvised music world. The duo’s first-ever live collaboration promises an adventurous dialogue of words and sound. Act Two presents "The Mexican Husband" (2019) by Fabiola Carranza, a bilingual reimagining of Bertolt Brecht’s "The Jewish Wife" set in contemporary Los Angeles. The play follows a couple’s final night together before the husband flees across the border to avoid deportation—an unflinching, poetic meditation on immigration, separation, and resilience in the face of systemic injustice. In celebration of Jane Austen’s 250th birthday and lasting influence! It is a truth (not) universally acknowledged that legendary author Jane Austen saw a lot of war and conflicts during her lifetime which greatly influenced the writing of her six novels. Why do we think of love and spend so much time with Jane Austen, even when she's not thinking of us? In this presentation, UCSD literature professor Lillian Lu takes a deep dive into Austen's famous style, free indirect discourse, and connects it to contemporary Asian diasporic adaptations of Austen's work. There will be a fun close reading exercise with the audience illustrating Austen's use of free indirect discourse and how her satire operates. Registration encouraged. Refreshments served. Dr. Lu is an Assistant Professor of Literature at UC San Diego, where she teaches classes about eighteenth-century Anglophone literature, the Gothic, and imperial culture. Don your best Regency attire and join dance hosts Ellen Riley and Ellie Konitshek from San Diego English Country Dancers for an introduction into the world of English Country Dance. You will be given the great opportunity to watch demonstrations of the dances mentioned in the works of Jane Austen and then, following a lesson geared towards beginners, try some of the dances for yourself. Period attire is strongly encouraged for this dance party! Registration encouraged. English Country Dance (ECD) is a social folk dance form that originated in Renaissance England and is a predecessor to contra and square dancing. Sometimes characterized by live music and graceful figures, it is typically danced in long lines where partners interact with a succession of other couples. MPact Global hosts the 3rd annual cross-border International HIV Kiss-In, a bold public demonstration celebrating the sexuality, visibility, and rights of queer people living with HIV and queer migrants. Featuring a symbolic kiss between two HIV-positive men, the event highlights ongoing stigma, human rights violations, and health inequities faced by queer migrants on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border.
