Bach Collegium San Diego Presents Knock out Sounds with Reginald Mobley The Return of Bach to Bop Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading baroque ensembles, is performing with countertenor d'Amore Reginald Mobley who showcases the thin lines between the worlds of baroque and jazz. The repertoire, from J.S. Bach and Purcell to Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, explores the world of improvisation, ornamentation, pulsating bass lines, and most importantly, groove. “When exploring the world of Baroque music and where it intersects with jazz, who better to lead the way than one of the great countertenors of this generation, Reginald Mobley,” said BCSD Musical Director Ruben Valenzuela. “We're incredibly fortunate to have him back with BCSD after the success of Bach to Bop from a few years ago. Get ready...from Purcell and Bach to Sarah Vaughan and Duke Ellington!" BCSD partnered with local schools to develop an education curriculum surrounding this program and the similarities and differences (and historical timeline of the genres) of baroque and jazz music. The pilot program is in development but BCSD is planning on having the students perform a piece or two on the concert program as a culmination of this special program. Beginning with Rebel's shocking depiction of chaos, through Beethoven's exhilarating ride from darkness to triumphant light. "I'm looking forward to leading an unlikely pairing of two revolutionary works with the intrepid, firecracker BCSD orchestra on historical instruments,” said BCSD Musical Director Ruben Valenzuela. “In particular, the opportunity to bring Beethoven's sound world to the iconic Symphony No. 5, like you've never heard it before!" Many people know the Beethoven piece (at least the opening da da da dun....) but this will be the first time the audience will hear the piece played on period instruments, a very different experience from a regular symphony orchestra sound. Peter Luongo Peter Luongo is one of the most experienced and highly regarded ukulele teachers/ directors in the world. He has dedicated over 40 years to enhancing the lives of generations of music students young and old. Peter began teaching the ukulele in 1981 and, over the past 5 decades, has taught thousands of children and adults, served as a professor in the Music Education Department at the University of B.C., and been a featured presenter at conferences throughout Canada, the U.S., and Europe! He is best known for leading the internationally renowned Langley Ukulele Ensemble (1981-2013). Peter continues to present at workshops throughout North America and Europe while also directing adult and children’s groups in Canada and the U.S. Since 2016, he has led The Legacy Ukulele Ensemble, an adult performing ensemble that regularly presents at ukulele festivals and events across the United States. Since 2016, he has been a Kala-sponsored artist and a regular consultant and presenter for the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM Show). He has also organized and led the NAMM ukulele initiatives since 2018. His workshops, retreats, and seminars are always stimulating, invigorating, inspiring, and a lot of fun! The Legacy Ukulele Ensemble The Legacy Ukulele Ensemble is a group of 14 players from across America and Canada who are committed to developing music literacy, musicianship, and ukulele playing skills. Their goal is to perform and share their music with audiences. The group was established in September 2016 and has continued to evolve, meeting both online and in person. Its repertoire includes Hawaiian, classical, folk, rock, pop, and country pieces. Past accomplishments have included appearances on the main stages at the Los Angeles, Hawaiian, Reno, Palm Springs, Ohio, and Michigan-based Ukulele Festivals. The ensemble has also participated in tours to Hawaiian, West Coast American states (Washington, Oregon, and California), Boston, and Pittsburgh. In recent years, they have had several performances at The California Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
