  • First Draft Push: How to Integrate all the Skill Sets of Structure, Character Arc, Voice and Scene Writing (and Book Proposal) In this class we will revisit the main building blocks of your memoir as well as hone the essential skill sets needed to complete your first draft. We will pay special attention to your structure, character arc and scene writing. We will also cover How to Write a Book Proposal in the last session of the class. Since the former sessions work on learning individual skill sets (think one melody at a time), this class is vital to assist the writer in learning how to use all of the skill sets at once for a first draft (think symphony). Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. Tone of class: We strive to create a supportive, nurturing environment where participants feel encouraged to share, risk and connect to their most creative self. • Setting provides a reader with a sense of place, and without that…there is no story. Setting is also the time and environment the story exists in. It establishes the mood and reveals characters, conflicts, and themes. Settings can shape, influence, and change characters. Detailed descriptions about personal spaces inform the reader about the characters who inhabit them. The setting can even be its own character! This workshop addresses the crucial role of establishing settings for both fiction and non-fiction. We will write from prompts to set our characters in settings that establish place, moods, and themes. We will also write scenes within settings. For new and experienced writers! • This event has been cancelled - and may be rescheduled Gráinne Hunt is an extraordinary performer with a captivating voice, who enchants audiences with her heart-melting vocals. She has shared stages with renowned musicians like Glen Hansard and U2, and has opened for Mary Black, Declan O’Rourke, Eagle Eye Cherry, and Kane Brown. Notably, she had the honor of opening for Gladys Knight in Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre over four nights, and performed at the Cambridge Folk Festival in the United Kingdom. Gráinne’s powerful voice blends huskiness with vulnerability, making her a standout among Ireland’s female vocalists and songwriters. Comparisons have been drawn to Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant, and Dolores O’Riordan. Her albums Firing Pin (2015) and This Secret (2019) delve into personal experiences, evoking pain, longing, and the complexities of relationships. Jules Stewart, stalwart drummer of the San Diego indie music scene, and Amy Day, half of the Spiritual Motels, will join Gráinne, reprising their collaboration at this year’s Folk Alliance showcase. Stucky Leigh, a cool new San Diego collaboration with Will Stucky and Lauren Leigh, will open the evening. www.grainnehunt.com www.stuckyleigh.bandcamp.com Grainne Hunt on Instagram and Facebook
