This class will explore the range of techniques possible when using acrylics, with emphasis on saturated color and creativity. Students will be encouraged to paint freely and spontaneously. Materials: Paint: Fast-drying acrylics are recommended, although students may opt for the “open” (slow-drying) type if they prefer. Brand names include Liquitex, Golden, Utrecht, and Winsor & Newton. Colors: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Naphthol Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. Other useful colors: Brilliant Purple, Dioxazine Purple, Hookers Green Deep Hue Permanent. The first six colors and Titanium White are a must-have. Any other colors the student may have are encouraged. Brushes: Brights, #2, #4, #6. (Winsor & Newton University brand is good.); any bristle brush students may have. Supports: Small canvas panels, 5” x 7”, 6” x 8”, 8” x 8”, 8” x 10.” These can be purchased at Michaels (quite inexpensive and good quality). Other: Support for the panels (thick cardboard, etc.); disposable or covered palette; paper towels; finger sprayer; water container; roll of masking tape; selection of photo references (still life, flowers, landscape, and people in groups). The San Diego chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers presents the ASID Kitchen and Bath Tour 2025. The self-guided tour will feature eight beautifully designed homes in San Diego with newly remodeled kitchens and baths. The tour will showcase an array of styles, tastes, lifestyles, and personal preferences and demonstrate the effectiveness of professional interior design in meeting specific objectives. Projects feature the latest trends in flooring, surfaces, appliances, cabinetry, color, lighting, sustainability, furniture, technology and universal design. The homes on tour, which range from sleek modern to mid-century to traditional, reflect their owners' personalities, budgets, and lifestyles. Advance tickets are $40 per person, and group discounts are available. Day-of-event tickets are $50. Recovery is not a drag! Lambda Uptown Alano Club, a San Diego non-profit organization benefiting people in recovery, invites you attend its first annual Recovery Royalty event on February 13th, 2025. It is an amateur drag and talent competition highlighting local talent, modeled after other popular events put on by various LGBTQ+ fundraising communities, such as Imperial Court, Leather Community, and Bear Community. Performers for this event must be in recovery. Audience members and a panel of judges will vote on a grand prize winner based on the performances. The grand prize winner will gain the honor of becoming the esteemed reigning member of Recovery Royalty for 2025, complete with all the wonderful accessories of a queen: a sash, a septor, and, of course, a crown! They will also have the ability to perform in future galas put on by Lambda, and gain the opportunity to organize a fundraising event for the community in 2025. Emcee’d by Luxe Versace, a sober drag artist and a keystone member of San Diego’s LGBTQ+ recovery community, the event will also feature raffle prizes, a silent auction, and a win-a-date auction in which guests will bid to date a member of Royalty. Food and drinks will be provided by local restaurants and The Rail. Lambda Uptown Alano Club was founded by Julia Nava and Heather Paetow, a couple on a mission to create a safe place for LGBTQ+ members of the recovery community in San Diego. Unfortunately, the original Alano club in Hillcrest closed due COVID and rent increases in 2021. Proceeds from the Recovery Royalty event will support the Lambda Uptown Alano Club in finding a new, permanent, self-owned location for their Alano Club, providing a safe space for 12-step meetings and LGBTQ+ friendly recovery-focused social events.
