Reception with both artists, Elsa Orozco-Toops and Luz Shephard, at 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. on July 19, 2025. The award-winning and wide-ranging artwork of Luz Shepard and Elsa Orozco-Toops will be decorating the walls of the Winer Family Community Room & Art Gallery from July to August. Luz Shepard has enjoyed learning a variety of art styles throughout her life, but over the past 30 years, she has focused on pastels and Sumi-e. Shepard’s art is inspired by the beautiful nature of San Diego, and some of her favorite drawing and paintings are of the epiphyllum flowers in her own backyard. Elsa Orozco-Toops’ also likes to work with a variety of art styles, including oil, water, acrylic, ink, ceramics, and couture. Particle FM presents a special evening of ambient music and sound art at Quint Gallery in La Jolla. The evening will feature Berlin-based musician, DJ, and field recordist Jake Muir, with an opening set by cross-border sound art group New Tongues. Atrevido (Particle FM founder Christian Gonzalez) will open the evening with a DJ set. The event will feature Particle FM’s audiophile 4-speaker Klipsch sound system to create a dynamic listening experience in Quint’s expansive gallery space. RSVP online in advance to reserve a seat at particle.fm. Requested $15 donation at the door. Jake Muir is a Berlin based artist, DJ, and field recordist working with found sound. He approaches his practice as a listener first, carefully curating, layering and processing sounds that help him deconstruct and contextualize his lived experiences and influences. Using investigative software methodologies, DJ techniques, and dextrous engineering, Muir makes deeply personal sonic art that fluidly traverses genre, encouraging reflection, and sometimes prompting psychedelic states. Muir’s work has been presented at various spaces and festivals including INA-GRM (Paris), Public Records (NYC), Roter Salon (Berlin), Blitz Club (Munich), Human Resources (Los Angeles), The Lab (San Francisco), Honcho Campout (PA), and Sustain Release (NY). His recordings have been published by Sferic Records, Ilian Tape, Enmossed, Dust Editions, Further Records, and Boomkat Editions. His album Bathhouse Blues was included in Pitchfork’s 30 Best Jazz and Experimental Albums of 2023 list. New Tongues is a cross-border sound art group based in Baja, Mexico and San Diego, California. Founded in 2023 by artist/musician Preston Swirnoff with field recordist/sound designer Xareni Lizarraga and violist/producer Kathia Rudametkin, New Tongues is an adventure in interdisciplinary collaboration. With an emphasis on live performance and immersive sound environments, the group uses sound sculptures, field recordings, and traditional instruments to craft electroacoustic song forms that celebrate intimacy, sound ecologies, and deep listening. This performance will feature Swirnoff and Lizarraga as a duo. Particle FM is a community internet radio station and event producer that was founded in 2021 and aims to represent an intersection of cultures, identities, and musical styles. The title of his poetry workshop for beginning or seasoned poets comes from a line of poetry by Pablo Neruda. The great Chilean poet was describing the way poetry affected him. Moreno reported that he was watching the movie "Il Postino," a film about Neruda’s relationship with a postman. The movie was over, and Moreno was watching the credits on VHS when a few lines of the poem, Poetry, appeared. Moreno stated that the words mesmerized him, and he had to rewind the film until he had copied all the words in the poem. When we read a poem, written by a poet in love with the art, how does it affect us? This class will review men and women poets whose love for the spoken word embodies what Moreno calls IMIC: Inspiration, Motivation, Imagination, Contagion. In other words, a poem inspires us, then motivates us to write, then calls the gift of our imagination, then creates contagious composition among anyone hearing the poem and is inspired by the sound, the rhythm, & the story of the poem. The first 90 minutes will include poetry from Rumi, Kim Rosen, Kalil Gibran, and Naomi Shihab Nye that may inspire healing, hope, and kindness in the poets attending this class. Film clips of these poets will be blended with poems read by Moreno that counter hate and ignorance and might be named poetry for trying times. Moreno remembers Neruda’s quote that the poet’s task is to comfort the disturbed and to disturb the comfortable. The great American poet William Stafford stated this about the work of Naomi Shihab Nye: her poems combine transcendent liveliness & sparkle with warmth and human insight. She is a champion of the literature of encouragement and heart. Reading her work enhances life. The second 90 minutes moves the poetry to local poets who have inspired Moreno: Sharon Elise, Steve Kowit (R.I. P.), Delores Fisher, Rudy Francisco, and Joe Milosch are strong storytellers who hold the promise of inspiration to any who will carve out time to listen. Canadians usually head south for the skiing, shopping and nightlife in American ski towns. But due to cross-border politics, tourism to the U.S. is down, and some resorts are worried.

Casa Familiar is proud to announce the opening of a new art exhibition which explores artisanal practices, traditions and crafts that have been passed from person to person through generations. The exhibition, titled “Infinite Rivers" opens July 12 and runs through Sept. 13, 2025. An opening reception will be held July 12 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at The FRONT Gallery in San Ysidro (147W San Ysidro Blvd, San Ysidro, 92173). Indigenous artists from the Kumeyaay community, Chemehuevi, Zapotec, Huichol, Taraumara communities, as well as artists from San Diego and Tijuana, Lebanon and Colombia, will participate in this exhibition. Their works show that while artisanal practices and traditions are passed down through generations, sometimes those traditions are kept intact for thousands of years, and sometimes they are in constant evolution. The artist Andrea Echeverri, from Colombia, better known for her music project “Los Aterciopelados," will be showing some of her ceramic creations and will be at the opening reception to share a little bit about their new album. Francisco Eme, gallery director at The FRONT Arte & Cultura, curated the exhibition. “In the face of emerging technologies, addiction to screens, mass produced objects, and annihilation of cultural practices, keeping crafting traditions alive seems like an impossible endeavor,” said Eme. “'Infinite Rivers' invites us to appreciate these practices from a caring and culturally conscious approach.” The Front Arte & Cultura on Facebook / Instagram

A Turkey Wing hand broom is an epic example of Appalachian folk art. It could be considered a functional tool or a decorated art piece. These brooms are made with natural broomcorn. Instructor AB will teach you the traditional techniques for binding and shaping the broomcorn, which is made from sorghum, to create a fun and unique experience…others call it a spiritual occurrence.
