This celebration is an opportunity for individuals and families of all backgrounds to learn, engage, and connect with the rich American history that shapes our shared future. Together, we can celebrate the strength and unity of our community, while creating a space where all are invited to grow, contribute, and make a difference. It is presented and hosted by Lionel and Natalie Saulsberry of the Couples Unfiltered Podcast/LLC in partnership with Clinton and Renee Huggins of AIM achievementinmotion.org We will host an opening ceremony with an MC, the Black National Anthem, the National Anthem, a Marine Corps Color Guard, a speaker and prayer. Then kick off the event with a DJ, keynote speakers and love music. 25-30 unique vendors from all over North County, San Diego and L.A. will be positioned for your shopping and engagement pleasure. We will be offering a special paid entry ticketed VIP section of the event where we will showcase local Black Executive Chefs from all over the county, serving small bites, as well as providing Zero-Proof Bartending services. The tickets include entry to this VIP section of the event, photo ops and swag bags. Tickets sales will be announced closer to the end of May. The proceeds of the sales will be donated to two local non-profit organizations participating in the event. Running weekends from May 3 through June 9, this all-new event is designed to be a child’s first festival, where families can rock out, build big, and explore five hands-on zones focused on music, creativity, dance, gaming, and chill time. Drawing from their latest works, “Freeset” and “Loka,” the authors will explore how speculative fiction can address timely societal issues, including identity, memory and technology. The conversation will be moderated and will take place on Wednesday, May 28, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Seuss Room at Geisel Library. About the Authors Sarina Dahlan ’98 is the author of the bestselling Four Cities trilogy — “Reset,” “Preset” and “Freeset” — as well as “Shadow Play: Ten Tales from the In-between.” Born into an Indonesian family in Thailand and immigrating to the United States at age 12, Dahlan brings a global perspective to her work, influenced by folklore, mythology and Japanese manga. A UC San Diego alumna with degrees in psychology and visual arts, her writing explores memory, identity and the cost of utopia. S.B. Divya, MEng ’00 is a Hugo- and Nebula-nominated author whose work bridges hard science and imaginative storytelling. Her novels include “Machinehood,” “Meru” and “Loka,” which examine themes such as automation, cultural identity and artificial intelligence. A former electrical engineer with degrees in computational neuroscience and signal processing from UC San Diego, Divya’s fiction often reflects her technical background and challenges conventional genre boundaries. Prog-Rock Powerhouse Stick Men Return to San Diego with Chapman Stick Virtuoso Tom Griesgraber Nearly two years since their last San Diego performance, Stick Men — the progressive rock supergroup featuring Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, and Markus Reuter — return to the Bornemann Theater in San Marcos. This marks a special homecoming of sorts, as Mastelotto and Reuter were the first national touring act to perform at the Bornemann’s Grand Opening in May 2024, along with Trey Gunn as part of their band TU-NER. Formed in 2007, Stick Men is known for their adventurous sound built around electric touch-style instruments like the Chapman Stick and the self-designed U8 guitar. Levin (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) anchors the trio with his mastery of the Chapman Stick, an instrument that simultaneously covers both bass and melody. Mastelotto brings an innovative approach to percussion, blending acoustic drums with an electronic setup, while Reuter adds layers of depth and texture with his custom instrument. Combined, the band’s members have contributed to records selling over 100 million copies worldwide. Opening the night is renowned Chapman Stick player Tom Griesgraber, whose genre-blending performances often include guitar Theremin and collaborations with artists from the California Guitar Trio to RYMO featuring Slightly Stoopid’s drummer Ryan Moran. With over ten releases and a resume that includes touring with Jerry Marotta and opening for legends like Steve Hackett and Al DiMeola, Griesgraber’s set promises a diverse and compelling lead-in to the night’s headliners.
