In his own words: “I was exposed to Latin Jazz while obtaining my degree at Cornish School of the Arts by drummer Jerry Granelli and was surprised at how naturally it came to me. I felt it. Since then, I am most comfortable in this particular genre of jazz. As time has gone by, I have tweaked the term Latin Jazz to Homey Jazz. I did so because I realized that the majority of my audience is brown smiling faces and I am well received by them. The moniker Latin Jazz didn’t seem to quite fit my particular audience because in my world they were my homeys. You see, Latin Jazz has many subplots and while I identify with Mongo Santamaria and Poncho Sanchez, I was seeing that Latin Jazz was being applied to a much more intricate form that seemed to be more be-bopish than Latin. Again, I looked at my audience and saw that neither they nor I were into that complex a music. We were more into the groove than the mental aptitude test of the more complex forms Latin Jazz was taking. Each year the ARCS Foundation, San Diego Chapter, a non-profit organization led entirely by women, hosts a Scientist of the Year fundraiser to honor a preeminent local scientist. This year’s honoree, Dr. Terry Sejnowski, is one of the world’s foremost computer scientists and computational neuroscientists, whose visionary and ingenious work on neural networks laid the foundation for the machine learning and AI revolution that is taking the world by storm today. Dr. Sejnowski is head of Salk Institute’s Computational Neurobiology Laboratory and holder of the Frances Crick Chair. He is also a distinguished professor at UC San Diego’s School of Biological Sciences, where he is co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation. ARCS San Diego invites you to join them for a celebration of science and scientists that is set for Saturday, April 27 (4 - 8 p.m.) at The Conrad Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. About Justin & Melonie Grinnell MELONIE GRINNELL is an active as an educator and performer. She began studying piano at an early age and has since been recognized for her skills as a pianist, and her abilities as a vocalist, music educator, and musical director. Melonie received her Bachelors of Music degree in Music Education with jazz emphasis from the University of Miami and a Masters of Music performance degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. Additionally, she is on the faculty for the Francis Parker/KSDS 88.3 Summer Jazz Workshop where she teaches jazz piano and co-directs middle school to high school student ensembles. She is also active as an adjudicator for instrumental jazz festivals including the Coronado/COSA Jazz Festival and the KSDS Jazz 88/CMEA festival. JUSTIN GRINNELL is a San Diego-based freelance jazz bassist and music educator. More importantly, he is a husband to pianist/educator Melonie Grinnell and father to their two sons. In addition to performing, Justin maintains an active teaching schedule as adjunct faculty at University of San Diego and Grossmont College, and as faculty for the Francis Parker Annual Summer Jazz Workshop. He has also served as an adjudicator and clinician at local music festivals, such as the Coronado Jazz Festival and the San Diego Bass Fest. Justin received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Jazz Performance from San Diego State University while studying with bassists Gunnar Biggs and Bert Turetzky. Justin also achieved ABD (all but dissertation) status for a doctoral degree in Jazz Studies at the University of Southern California. Palomar Performing Arts Proudly Presents CONCERT HOUR Every Thursday at 1 p.m. Emilia Lopez-Yañez is an award-winning singer and oboist. Raised in a musical family, Emilia began performing at a young age and proceeded to continue her musical journey professionally. After earning her Bachelor’s Degree at Chapman University in both vocal and oboe performance, she went on to receive her Masters in oboe performance at the University of Southern California while simultaneously starting a career as a freelance performer. Lopez-Yañez has performed up and down the west coast with the Pacific Symphony, Bay Philharmonic, San Diego City Ballet Orchestra, and Palimpsest, in addition to international performances in Mexico, the Czech Republic, and India. As a Grammy member, Emilia has collaborated on projects with international artists Dan Aykroyd, Julian Lennon, Ricky Kej, Rupam Sarmah, and Allan White of YES. She was the featured oboist on the Chill instrumental single, Distorted Time which charted on the Billboard Charts. Through these recordings, she hopes to expand the musical genres in which oboe can be found, including Jewish-Indian fusion, Chill, House, and Children’s Music. Emilia is an adjunct faculty member at Palomar and Mira Costa Colleges and maintains a large private teaching studio. Ruth Weber has performed internationally as a pianist and been an accompanist/coach with numerous organizations including the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, Opera Aguascalientes, and California State University, Northridge. She was a recording artist with the Music-Minus-One division of the Marantz Corporation, and an Artistic Director/coach for operatic productions presented by Jean Will Presents. Ms. Weber is the director of the award-winning and Billboard charting San Diego Jewish Men’s Choir, and an accomplished composer whose music has won the John Lennon Songwriting Competition, the Global Peace Song Awards, the Shalshelet Music Festival, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and more. Her compositions have appeared on recordings, in films, in print music with Alfred and Hal Leonard publishing companies, and have been performed by the Omaha, Virginia, Rochester and Nashville Symphonies. Ruth is presently the Applied Music Coordinator and an adjunct faculty member at Palomar College in addition to teaching music courses at S.D. Miramar College.

She is writing a book titled Japanese American Citizens as Survivors of the Hiroshima Atomic Bombing (Routledge, forthcoming). This book tells the story of young American citizens of Japanese ancestry who were in Hiroshima during World War II and their efforts to survive the atomic bomb, make their way back to the United States, build a life on the painful memories of their past, start a social movement to obtain medical relief from both the Japanese and American governments, and contribute to the peace movement for a world without nuclear weapons. Her presentation will discuss the challenges she has faced in the writing process.

He holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from University of Massachusetts - Amherst, and a Master of Music Degree from San Diego State University. He has performed thousands of gigs all across the United States, but primarily slowly crawls the freeways of Southern California on the way to the next performance. He has performed in every kind of band - from classical to jazz, blue grass to punk. Jon has studied privately with the great guitar masters, Yusef Lateef, Sephane Wrembel, and Gonzalo Bergara, and was lucky enough to glean insights from both Joe Pass and Jim Hall personally. Their wisdom planted the seeds that would become the G Way, use a little to get a lot, simplify. Jon has been teaching for 20 years. Many of his students have become professional musicians themselves, but he teaches beginners and experts alike. He teaches in his private studio, at Palomar College, San Diego School of the Creative and Performing Arts, and online. So far, knock on wood, all of his students have passed their auditions, due to their hard work and Jon's no-nonsense approach to playing guitar.
