Join us for a concert-lecture by pianist Daniel Beliavsky while he explores and performs well-known works by Chopin, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, and Shostakovich. Through performance and discussion, Dr. Beliavsky will demonstrate how these artists, each inhabiting unique musical, philosophical, and political trajectories from periphery to mainstream, contributed enormously to the pillars of Western modernism. He has performed in Europe and throughout the United States both with orchestra and in recital. Notable engagements include concerto performances with the Milwaukee and New Jersey Symphony Orchestras and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra. His discography includes the world-premiere recording of composer Lukas Foss’s complete piano works, early works by Donald Harris and David Del Tredici, and music by J.S. Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Franz Schubert, Frédéric Chopin, and Modest Mussorgsky. Beliavsky’s recordings are available on all major streaming services. Beliavsky produces music documentaries through his production company, Opus1films, which in 2011 released "Sonata (1957)," a film about the distinguished American composer Donald Harris’s opus one, the Sonata for piano, and about Harris’s early career in Paris. That film was shown at Lincoln Center in New York City and was broadcast on public television. More recently, Beliavsky completed "Secret Music and Gay Body of Music," a feature film and a short film respectively, about Pulitzer Prize–winning composer David Del Tredici and the social and cultural impact of his music. These films have won multiple accolades and have been screened at film and music festivals, including QFest Houston, Berlin Shorts, and the Wisconsin Film, Mostly Modern Music, American Music, Lonely Seal International Film, Toronto LGBTQ+ Film, San Diego International Film, Rotterdam Independent Film, and San Francisco Arthouse Short Festivals. Recently, Secret Music was screened at Lehigh University and the University of Missouri–Kansas City. Additionally, Beliavsky has been producing educational videos for the San Diego Opera on the operas the company is showcasing during the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 seasons. These videos may be found on both the SDO’s and Beliavsky’s YouTube channels. Now Chair of the Fine Art and Music Department at Yeshiva University in New York City, Beliavsky has been a visiting professor of music theory, piano performance, aesthetics, writing about music, and history at several universities, including The City College of New York, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Stern College, Montclair State University, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Mannes College, and New York University. Dive into the world of theater with our latest exhibition, "Alex Katz: Theater and Dance," and draw costume designs inspired by friends and loved ones and set designs inspired by a memorable place or somewhere that you have always wanted to visit. Reflections is an art-making workshop series designed to serve adults 55 and older. In this new 4-week art series, consider what story you want to tell through your theater-inspired artwork and take inspiration from your own life to create. Imagine yourself, your friends, and your family, each depicted in the costume designs they would wear in a play about your lives, and design a set or backdrop where a scene from your life might play out. Whether you're a beginner or experienced, these workshops offer a fun and supportive space to explore new creative possibilities! Each workshop will include an investigation of contemporary art-making techniques and materials. No prior art experience is required. Registration gives participants access to the full series (four workshops). Weekly Program September 12 & 19: Costume Design Drawing Drawing inspiration from Katz’s costume designs, create representations of yourself and your friends or family. Consider what type of clothes each member in your group might wear–what scene will you be depicting and what type of clothes make sense in it? Will it be everyday clothes or something for a special trip or occasion? You will create your own costume designs through a combination of drawing and tracing. October 3 & 10: Set Design Drawing Create a set design drawing for the theater production of your life inspired by Katz’s set designs. Imagine important or exciting moments in your life and how these might look in a play or reimagine the event happening in a location that you long to visit. Consider whether your set design drawing will be for an interior or exterior location. What would be included in this space? Perhaps a couch or a tree. You will design these, drawing and imagining your world as a stage where costumes and sets work together to bring your theater-inspired artworks to life. CHA is proud to announce the opening of its newest WWII exhibit. In honor of this exhibit, join us Thursday, November 6, for an exhibit opening reception and lecture featuring author Kitty Morse. Kitty will discuss her new book, "Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France." This book was written after she discovered her great-grandfather's journal chronicling the advance of the Germans in Le Grand Est (Alsace-Lorraine) between April and December 1940, and two notebooks filled with recipes written in her great-grandmother’s hand in a suitcase left to her by her mother. "Bitter Sweet" takes place in and around her mother’s birthplace, Châlons-sur-Marne (now Châlons-en-Champagne.) Blanche Lévy-Neymarck, Morse's maternal great-grandmother, died at Auschwitz in 1944 along with one of her daughters and her son-in-law. Blanche's husband Prosper, an army surgeon in WWI, was twice the recipient of the Légion d'Honneur. This book is not just the story of a family torn apart by war, but it also features 70 unique recipes that show the rich history of a family. About the Speaker: Award-winning author Kitty Morse was born in Casablanca, Morocco, to a French mother and a British father. She emigrated to the United States at the age of 17. While studying for her Master’s Degree at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Kitty catered Moroccan diffas, or banquets, and went on to teach the intricacies of Moroccan cuisine in cooking schools and department stores nationwide. In June 2002, she conducted a Culinary Concert on Moroccan culture and cuisine hosted by Julia Child, as a benefit for the Harry Bell Foundation of the International Association of Culinary Professionals. Kitty’s books have been translated into French, German, Polish, and Czech. In 1984 (and for the next 25 years) she initiated annual gastronomic tours to Morocco that included culinary demonstrations in her family home, a Moorish riad south of Casablanca. About the Artists Shea Givens, a Missouri native now based in Southern California, is a musician known for her powerful live performances. With influences from R&B, Neo-Soul, Blues, Rock, and Country, she is unafraid to experiment with genre styles. Shea's music explores themes of love, mental health, and self-acceptance, drawing from personal experiences. She recently released the song "anxieties" both as a solo performance and with her band, showcasing her versatile musical style. Currently, Shea is working on her upcoming album with her bandmates, with the first single set to release in May 2024. Anthony Cullins, known as “The Fallbrook Kid,” fuses blues, funk, rock, and soul into a dazzling guitar style that’s earned him San Diego Music Awards for Best Blues Artist (2023) and Artist of the Year (2025).
