Note: Though this class is offered as part of the "Certificate in Poetry", there is no pre-requisite to join this class. All students, members, and nonmembers are encouraged to enroll. In this final workshop of the Certificate in Poetry program, the student will concentrate on the design of a publishable manuscript. The student will continue workshopping poems, reading and analyzing books of poetry, providing valuable comment and feedback on each other’s manuscripts. Further, the student will discover publishing sources for individual poems and contests for chapbook and complete book manuscripts, the necessary recordkeeping for this endeavor, and practice how to give a professional poetry reading. For students not ready to compile a manuscript, each class also includes a writing prompt, short lesson or introduction to a poet, and a read & critique session. - Each participant will choose one poetry craft book and submit by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book. - Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. - Students will prepare a number of copies of their completed manuscript for distribution to the other students at the end of class three. - Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop for both individual poems and manuscripts. Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. July 30 – Aug. 20 (4 weeks, 12 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio This course is for the beginner abstract painter or a refresher for the seasoned artist. This class is designed for you to tap into your intuition and discover your own style through embracing the process. While practicing the principles of abstract acrylic painting, we will work to find a balance between using these techniques and learning to trust our intuition. The focus will be on process, as we learn together how to start, loosen up, take risks, trust our gut, lean into our emotions, and let go of perfection in our paintings. Along with the foundations of color, composition, and line/shape, we will practice intuitive mark making and layering and allowing each of these to inform what comes next on the canvas. As your artistic voice unfolds, your own unique visual language will appear. Materials: Variety of brushes; any tools, palette knives, wedges, color shapers you have (not necessary, but helpful); acrylic paint in various colors (your favorites but also Titanium White and Raw Umber); palette or palette paper; small canvas (no smaller than 12” x 12”) and any size larger canvas. Note: If you're a beginner, bring a basic starter set of paints or even craft paints. No need to go out and purchase a bunch of expensive paints! A medium-bodied paint is best, but using a variety of fluid medium and heavy-bodied paints will give your work more interest. The performance features Teresa Díaz de Cossio on flute, with singers from the new music ensemble at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, and in^set (David Aguila and Ilana Waniuk) shaping the electronics, sound design, and live visuals.
